Liz believes she is too black and too poor to be like the others who are rich and run for prom king or queen. The town she lives in has prejudices towards the lgbtq since you can’t go to prom as a date with the same sex and dance with them. When Liz’s financial aid falls through, she remembers that winning prom queen will give her a scholarship, so she runs for prom queens and starts to fall in love with a girl.
I thought the relationship was cute. The relationship with her family was great too and I always love seeing family dynamics in books. I enjoyed seeing Liz grow as she ran for prom queen. I did think somethings were way over dramatized in a high school setting.

The Shadow of the Gods is a Norse-inspired world. It’s really dark and grim. Orka loves her life. She has a husband and son she really adores. When her son goes missing she goes out to find out who took her child as well as others. She will get revenge. Elvar is in the Battle-Grim and wants battle glory. They will take the bones of the gods. The gods were once living and had a war and died. Varg runs away from his master and wants to find out who murdered his sister, so he goes with the Bloodsworn and is trying to prove himself. Will they all get what they want and will there be consequences?
I love multi point of view stories and I especially like when all the characters come together, but in this story that doesn’t happen and I’m hoping it happens in a later book. I loved Orka as a character. She’s really badass and you don’t want to mess with her. Her love for her son runs strong and I just love seeing motherhood in a fantasy book. The other two characters were okay, I just felt meh about their plot lines. Also, I don’t drink, but towards the last 50% of the book he used the word thought-cage so much that you could play a drinking game to it. I thought the world building and plot lines were slow and sometimes I enjoy a slow build, but in this case I felt bored at times. Additionally, I felt like the ending was abrupt. I am still curious how the rest of this series will turn out, so I’ll read the sequel.

Daniel suffers from SMA since he was a baby and is confined in a wheel chair and cannot talk without his electronics. He sees a woman get in a car with a man and she disappears. The whole state of Georgia is looking for her. He posts on Reddit about it and starts corresponding with a man who says he has her. Does he really? Will the police believe Daniel even though he is disabled?
I really enjoyed this and found it to be funny and suspenseful. I love how optimistic Daniel is even though he suffers from a deliberating disability, which definitely does not put him down. His friendships were great and they always had his back. I didn’t like how the cops treated Daniel because he has a disability. I did find at times Daniel did do some stupid things. However, overall this a great book and you all should pick it up.

Yadriel is trans and wants his dad to accept him as a boy. Meanwhile, he summons a ghost and the wrong ghost. He summons the hot, bad boy Julian who happened to just be murdered. Yadriel finds out some people have been murdered have had their bodies vanish. He is determined to find out what is happening.
I liked the idea of a transgender main character who is trying to find acceptance with their identity as long with the others around them. I liked the idea of the bodies disappearing. Also, I liked Julian’s antics, which were hilarious. However, I found the book to be a bit boring. I couldn’t connect with the characters and with the plot. It just fell flat for me. I’m sure many people will love this book-especially during Halloween time.

Words of Radiance takes place right after The Way of Kings. I’m not going to go into detail about what this book is about because it will spoil what happened in The Way of Kings.
This book was just a chef’s kiss. Even though I’ve only read two out of the four books, I’m just in love with this series, obsessed, and it’s now my favorite book series. I cannot stop thinking about these characters. I love that these characters have mental health issues and have to find ways to overcome them. Sometimes it gets them in trouble because they aren’t really coping with it. I love Kaladin with his broody, selfish self. Shallan is becoming badass and starting to learn how to be and to be more assertive. These characters are flawed and it makes them seem very human and real. These books are just layered and it’s amazing. There is conflict within themselves and with the Parshendi. The characters learning about their magic is great too. The world building is just getting better and better. There was a lot of oh crap moments that made me want to continue reading on. You guys really have to read this series! I can’t wait to read the novella and Oathbringer!

The Way of Kings opens up with the King of Alethkar signs a treaty with the Parshendi, however on the night the treaty has been signed, the Parshendi sends an assassin and King Galivar is assassinated. War breaks out between the Alethi and Parshendi. Kaladin is a spearman in the army and kills a person and is made a slave. He tries to escape multiple times, but fails each time. Eventually he is assigned to be a Bridgeman, which is a death sentence. He keeps somehow surviving the runs and eventually tries to win the other Bridgemen in his crew. Shallan wants Jasnah, the sister of Elohkar to take her as a ward. If she can become a ward of Jasnah, then she can steal Jasnah’s soulcaster to save her family. Dalinar is the brother of Galivar and the uncle to the current King. He feels like the war can be won if they think differently and do stuff different. Also, during every highstorm he has visions and people thinks he is going mad. He even obsesses over Galivar’s last words and goes over the book The Way of Kings to find out meaning.
I saw a kid at the school I work out with The Rhythm of War, which is book four and I was like maybe I will find out what series it is from and read it since I like big books. I have been following Peruse Project on YouTube and she has been talking about the series a lot, so I decided I’m going to read this. Well, this book hooked me from the beginning and didn’t let me go. I freaking love Kaladin and my heart broke for him multiple times. I enjoyed the cast of characters and the world building. The friendships that were formed were great. This book was chef kiss. Pick this series up!

Warning this is probably an unpopular opinion.
This is a Mulan meets The Song of Achilles story. Also, it’s queer. This takes place during the Ming Dynasty and is an reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor. Zhu and her family are in poverty and her brother has a great destiny and is to become a monk. After her brother and father die, she takes the place of her brother as a monk and pretends to be a boy. From there on she must survive and after the monastery burns down, she becomes a commander.
I liked that this was a reimagining and queer. I like the friendship between Zhu and Xa Da. However, I really struggled reading this book. There was times I would zone out and one time it was putting me to sleep because I was so bored. Books don’t tend to do that to me. I felt like the relationships-especially the romantic one was forced and that there was a lack of chemistry. I felt like the characters were one dimensional too. I wanted more out of the war scenes too. I doubt I’ll read the sequel.

I remember when this was a pick on Book of the Month and I passed on it. I did remember seeing a lot of people saying it was really good, so I finally decided to read it. I loved the reality tv theme since I do like reality tv. Her finding how to be comfortable in her skin and with her weight was amazing. I would love to see plus sized women on dating shows as well. The men were great as well as the dates. I loved how it ended. You all need to read this book, it was delightful.

Cee arrives on an island and doesn’t know how she got there, but she knows she has a sister named Kay somewhere out there. Will she find her? Kassy, an introvert and loner has a sister and she has gone missing.
I liked this author’s Descendant of the Crane, so I was looking forward to this book. I thought it was okay and I didn’t like the narrator at all. The plot twists were really good and I didn’t see them coming.

Charlie came out as gay when he was in year 9 and was bullied. After he was bullied and in year 10 he becomes popular. He ends up sitting next to a boy named Nick who is in year 11 and plays Rugby. Both become friends and Charlie starts crushing on Nick. Could the crush ever be reciprocated?
I wanted to pick this up in June for my graphic novel challenge for the summer reading challenge at the library, but someone has had it out since the beginning of June and it’s now July. I thought I would never get to read it and I went to the library to go get my level 2 prize for reading for 40 days for the summer reading program and I got to choose a free book off of a cart. Well, nothing interested me until I saw Heartstopper Volume 1 on the cart, so I snagged it. I like that graphic novels are fast to read. I liked the friendship between Nick and Charlie. The conflict was well done too with Ben and Charlie. I do wish this was in color, but I’m not going to dock a star for that. I liked how sexuality was explored in the novel as well. It was cute and I can’t wait to read the next few volumes.
