The Shadow of the Gods
by John Gwynne
The Shadow of the Gods is a Norse-inspired world. It’s really dark and grim. Orka loves her life. She has a husband and son she really adores. When her son goes missing she goes out to find out who took her child as well as others. She will get revenge. Elvar is in the Battle-Grim and wants battle glory. They will take the bones of the gods. The gods were once living and had a war and died. Varg runs away from his master and wants to find out who murdered his sister, so he goes with the Bloodsworn and is trying to prove himself. Will they all get what they want and will there be consequences?
I love multi point of view stories and I especially like when all the characters come together, but in this story that doesn’t happen and I’m hoping it happens in a later book. I loved Orka as a character. She’s really badass and you don’t want to mess with her. Her love for her son runs strong and I just love seeing motherhood in a fantasy book. The other two characters were okay, I just felt meh about their plot lines. Also, I don’t drink, but towards the last 50% of the book he used the word thought-cage so much that you could play a drinking game to it. I thought the world building and plot lines were slow and sometimes I enjoy a slow build, but in this case I felt bored at times. Additionally, I felt like the ending was abrupt. I am still curious how the rest of this series will turn out, so I’ll read the sequel.
