Heartstopper Volume 1 by Alice Oseman
5.0

Charlie came out as gay when he was in year 9 and was bullied. After he was bullied and in year 10 he becomes popular. He ends up sitting next to a boy named Nick who is in year 11 and plays Rugby. Both become friends and Charlie starts crushing on Nick. Could the crush ever be reciprocated?
I wanted to pick this up in June for my graphic novel challenge for the summer reading challenge at the library, but someone has had it out since the beginning of June and it’s now July. I thought I would never get to read it and I went to the library to go get my level 2 prize for reading for 40 days for the summer reading program and I got to choose a free book off of a cart. Well, nothing interested me until I saw Heartstopper Volume 1 on the cart, so I snagged it. I like that graphic novels are fast to read. I liked the friendship between Nick and Charlie. The conflict was well done too with Ben and Charlie. I do wish this was in color, but I’m not going to dock a star for that. I liked how sexuality was explored in the novel as well. It was cute and I can’t wait to read the next few volumes.
