Enjoyable quick read, but not a whole lotta substance and a very unsatisfying and abrupt ending. I did like reading about the slight world building and the insecure brat vs overprotective brick trope, somehow this had a lot of good fluff. Also gud jalepeño squid scenes.

Expected a wild time with a demon deal resulting in a redhead bonking a crocodile but it was actually a pretty compelling and sweet story about recovering from a violent marriage and learning to trust again. Had a good time, jalapeños were spicy.

What started as a bit of a slow burn had me at the edge of my seat the further the story went. I expected a different sort of monster, those from myths, but instead got time stealing time travellers with a dash of petty magical powers thrown in. This didn’t stand in the way of the enjoyment of the story however. Once a monster always a monster I suppose, like the story the ending too was a surprise. And yet it was fitting and a tad dark as all things seemed in the monster underworld.

Surprisingly good mix between space colonist doom survival flick and monster romance, with a hint of alien social and political strife. Watching two alien species learn to interact with each others, learn each others languages and mannerisms from the beginning and seeing that blossom into an understanding, a friendship and then something more was heart warming. But the constant intrigue of how Ivy crashed onto the alien planet in the first place and slowly understanding that near everyone she ever cared about has died while she was simultaneously building a new life for herself on an alien planet with a Kethan, a cinnamon roll local with very different anatomy (spooder) and customs was very interesting. Ended on a cliffhanger but I’ll continue to read the full trilogy since I’m eager to see where their journey goes.

Jezus what an ending. While I did like that we finally delved into the sci-fi aspect by exploring the humans and the space voyage and it’s failures, this book was much slower paced and lost me in some places. It was an 8 day countdown with a lot of boot camping and going back an forth between leaving with the humans and Ketahn and Ivy moments. We do finally see the queendom in action, with a sickening head turn at the ending hehe. I’ll read the next book to see where we are heading, but I do hope it’s a bit less predictable and more fast paced and more action going on.

I think I sat on this book too long, after a while it became very hard for me to finish it. I liked the sci fit elements, the challenge for the throne, but the journey with the humans was a long and tiring one, and the new tribe did not leave me too interested either. The battles were well written, but that’s really all I have to say for this book and ending. Mid.

Exactly the kind of book I needed while trying to cope with my current little mermaid obsession, If not for the late hour I’d immediately start the next one.
