This series was such a nice read, from self discovery and finally having everything click into place to finding a home, both physically and in a lover, Gabriel’s journey for self acceptance and finding love with Casillus. I appreciated the action and high stakes in the last two books, but the slow burn romance with a hint of supernatural mer powers really was the star of the show.

What a beautiful atmospheric read. The mix of a woman in high society solving a murder in a mysterious ghostly mansion while flirting (literally) with death led to an intriguing mystery. I really enjoyed following Signa on her journey to freedom, and I’m looking forward to what her future will bring ;)

An incredibly complicated but beautifully descriptive fantasy set in a faraway land with complex politics, magics and factions. It was odd to be dropped into this world out of nothing, especially since you and the characters have no idea what’s going on. Through flashbacks you manage to catch up with the past, which the author managed to weave into the story in the present, with the future turning into having the previous two meet.

A lot of parts had me trying to piece together what was really meant, mostly because the setting is so established that there is little to no real explanation when certain factions or systems are mentioned. It could get confusing, especially throwing the flashbacks into the mix. I’m still not entirely sure if I managed to interpret everything correctly, but at the same time it was interesting and it kept the story very fast paced since it skipped over simplifying things and jumped straight into the action.

It took me a long time to finish since I couldn’t casually get into the book, but once I really sat down for it I managed to breeze through to the ending. Ziede was my fave ✌️

3.5 rounded down. Despite the small town scope, the creepiness and tension of the nightly outings into the nightmare filled forests were entertaining.

Winny Wednesday was a bit all over the place, going from fear to determination to suspicious throughout the story. Her relationships with the other characters never ran too deep, which makes sense due to the exile, but I almost would have liked more sole focus on her and jay for a bit more of a spark then there was now.

What really kept me interested were the spirits and the nightmares it would spawn, but we had a lot less encounters then I liked considering the amount that should be lurking around according to the compendium. I’m interested in reading the sequel since the plot twist at the end had me gasping. I still have quite some questions unanswered, so I’m curious to see how the rest of the story will pan out.

Cute but very surface level spice

Very cute, from dealing with prejudices to loving the prejudiced. Less spice then excepted but the sweetness more then made up for it.

4.5 - An incredibly rich world, a people lost by genocide with survivors hiding their identities and mingling with the general population. Do you owe your people loyalty because of a bloodline, or do you get to choose a life for your own. When is it selfish to want to live for yourself. And how does it feel when the injustice you thought was placed upon your people appears to have some merit after all.

Sylvia’s story is one of loss, survival, betrayal but also of hope, learning to trust and somehow love the things you thought you never could. I had a great time in the kingdoms that fell alive thanks to the incredible discription, each country had its own rich culture. As for the characters, the two heirs were front and center and the tension, the power dynamics between them were so interesting to see. They hacked at the cold ice between them bit by bit, and each choice they made always surprised the other, but also myself.

I’m looking forward to what the next book brings, and if the bonds will ever be mended again.

Felt like I was reading poetry about a dysfunctional abusive relationship where they’re sophisticated blood drinking passionate love making vampires, amazingly written.
