This book is a romp. I love Percy's pompousness, the banter, how the story balances right on the edge of ridiculousness to feel fun but not too over the top. Cat Stephens manages to make the progression of relationships feel so natural and earned.
Carmen Maria Machado is my kinda weird. A lot of the stories feel straight up absurd or nonsensical -- a lot is left up to the reader to extrapolate meanings. Regardless if I understood what she was trying to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in each story. Her writing just hits right.
This started out so great, but I wish the timeline wasn't so quick overall. I know it's true love or whatever, but falling in love with and deciding to live with a man within 2 weeks of knowing him makes me feel uncomfortable - my love bomb/healthy boundaries alarms are ringing eep
miscommunication trope reared its ugly head and i didn't connect with the characters enough to put up with it
I adore this book. This is a low-stakes political fantasy full of intrigue and a richly developed world that leaves your heart full at the end of it. I definitely struggled with the various naming conventions which may be why this didn't feel like a 5 star -- I had to keep searching for terms in the glossary and it occasionally took me out of the story.
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Physical abuse
Minor: Death of parent
My mistake in trying to read fantasy romance -- it's simply not to my taste. I was excited by the Greek Mythology tie-in but new Gods and powers kept showing up to save the day every 5 minutes. I guess Deus Ex Machina is an ancient greek concept so maybe that's fitting.
Not a big fan of the male love interest trying to justify kidnapping and everyone going along with it.Also he restored her life essence with his cum.
