God this book is fucking weird. I went into it blind, and I'm glad I did. I'll be thinking about it for a long, long time.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Body horror, Gore, Medical content
Moderate: Rape, Suicide
Minor: Miscarriage, Pregnancy
I wanted to like this, but I am realizing that I really don't like the "immediate connection makes me act like a fool" trope. I wanted a badass heroine, not one constantly distracted by a man she just met. I understand it is meant to be romantic, but it's not my personal taste. :(
I think Cat Stephens is a new favourite. This book manages to be both tender and fun. While I loved the character depth and the way it explored societal pressures of the time, I personally felt this book lacked a driving plot line that kept this from being a perfect story. (for me!)
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this book. I came away with a lot of insights about disability and my own sighted privelege, but also loved how Godwin wove in references to both her own life and cultural pieces.
Very instalove-y. For two responsible individuals, they both acted like fools, especially as the book progressed. I suppose that's because they were in love, but I was more annoyed than anything.
The "beast" is truly an asshole and I love him for it. This was very fun but the third-act conflict ruined the the ending for me. 3.75 for the 75% of this book that I enjoyed.
