I liked this second book much more than the first - being a second chance romance made the novella speed feel much more realistic than the first book. The spice was HOT, even though it's not normally my brand. I liked the character development and the "twist".

I'm not sure what to say about this book. In the beginning, I was pretty confident that I wasn't going to like it because of the writing style. Trying to explain it to someone else, I googled it and thought this was an incredibly apt description: Poetic and evocative - the writing is often described as poetic and beautiful, focusing on the feelings and sounds of words rather than always being direct.

By the end though, I found myself invested in Azzie and Vin and thought their story was told with a rawness and real vulnerability. There are strong horror elements/imagery, but I did not feel they were so graphic that they detracted from the experience.

DID NOT FINISH

I started this for work and they just never did anything with it so I stopped reading it since it wasn't interesting to me on my own.

I was really into the book for the first 60% and then it really started to drag for me. I don't know if I just grew tired of the style? This is definitely more of a descriptive scientific journal with some personal reflections than a driving space Odyssey focused on the bioengineering mentioned in the description.

This is a great read if you want to reflect on the ethics and purpose of space travel and discovery.

What a delightful, creepy read, ha ha. I'm glad it was a novella, because horror is not typically my genre. This did an excellent job of creating tension, spooky vibes, and driving a satisfying resolution.

I've never read the original by Poe so I had no expectations or basis of comparison. I feel like there were a couple spots I had to reread to make sure I was understanding, but I loved the bits of humor throughout.

This was a cute story about an aspiring unicorn keeper. There was a lot of phrase repetition, things like "a wave of pride washed over me", and the characters/relationships felt pretty flat. There was also a lot of hypocrisy from the FMC and some pretty negative, stereotypical gender portrayals that seemed unnecessary.

Overall, though, it was a cute novella and I liked how the author chose to end it. I read this for a readathon competition, and I do not expect I'll finish the series.

Like many other reviewers, I find memoirs hard to rate. I was not the demographic for this book (young, queer, Black boys) and I tried to keep that in mind.

The intent of the book was clear and I believe hit it's mark in giving relatable insight into what growing up Black and queer might look like for others to know they aren't alone. The commentary on heteronormative and white oppression was clear and impactful.

I didn't connect as much with the storytelling style - each chapter covers a particular lesson or point of view and may overlap in timeline with previous chapters. In one chapter someone has passed away, and in the next chapter they are alive again. This is the biggest reason I gave the rating I gave - nothing against the author as a person.
