All Boys Aren't Blue
by George M. Johnson
challenging
dark
reflective
slow-paced
Like many other reviewers, I find memoirs hard to rate. I was not the demographic for this book (young, queer, Black boys) and I tried to keep that in mind.
The intent of the book was clear and I believe hit it's mark in giving relatable insight into what growing up Black and queer might look like for others to know they aren't alone. The commentary on heteronormative and white oppression was clear and impactful.
I didn't connect as much with the storytelling style - each chapter covers a particular lesson or point of view and may overlap in timeline with previous chapters. In one chapter someone has passed away, and in the next chapter they are alive again. This is the biggest reason I gave the rating I gave - nothing against the author as a person.
