What the HECK!! I’m pretty new to the thriller genre and I enjoyed this book. The tension was there even a little before they reached his parents house but the tension was pretty consistent once they got there. I liked hearing the narrator’s indecisiveness about if they should stay with Jack or not. I thought the ending was kind of confusing at first but once you get it its great. Definitely recommend this book to people who might be new thriller readers.

I loved the poetic elements of this book, the repetition throughout the book was impactful and didn’t make me feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. The love story was aching, its so hard to feel seen by someone. I loved the references made to movies and music. A beautiful story about racism, love, police violence, and art.
Way too long. I don’t care about the Brothers Grimm stories as much as I thought I did.

Marjorie goes through some tough stuff in this one. She’s trying to navigate her new friendship(???) with the girl that bullied her in the first book. The girl mostly bosses Marjorie around and forces her to hang out with her. Marjorie meets and starts to get close to Eliza who is on a mission to get a picture of a ghost. Speaking of ghosts, Wendall is getting tired of being stuck in the laundromat all the time so Marjorie has to worry about him getting out too! I wished Marjorie would have left the bully’s friend group sooner. I felt so bad for Eliza, she had such a hard time making friends and the embarrassment of being held back a year. This book addresses topics such as loneliness, bullying, and making friends with the wrong people.

White people were worse to American Indians than we were taught in school. It was insane to learn that American Indians became wealthy after finding oil on the land that white people sent them to, but then being assigned a white person to manage their money because they are deemed not competent enough or less than human. And then when they start being murdered, police officials don't do anything about it. An incredible, well researched story about injustice, murder, and corruption.

Such a throwback to read this book! It was so fun to see Percy, Annabeth, and Grover complete quests as a team again. Percy has his iconic humor throughout but I loved when he talked about how much he loves Annabeth, I thought it was really sweet. The quest seemed pretty low stakes which added to the fun I had reading the book. I recommend this book to any Percy Jackson fan, past or present!

I really wanted to like this book more. The title and cover really drew me in and the concept was really interesting. But the execution didn’t work for me. I was confused about how much time had passed between some of the chapters. I wish they had explained the magic and the deals more. I don’t think there was any character growth and I don’t understand why the stuff with her dad was included. The big thing was Laurences “best friend”. I didn’t believe they were best friends at all. She kept saying she was her “best friend” but I didn’t see it, Laurence always seemed so critical of her that I could easily believe she actually hated her. I liked the found family and the stuff about ballet but that’s about it.
Graphic: Blood, Murder
Moderate: Self harm, Torture
It’s not really self harm so much as she needs to offer blood to the demon so she cuts herself.

As someone with PTSD, I was really curious going into this book. Foo does a very good job of explaining the difference between PTSD and complex PTSD. She was very vulnerable when talking about the abuse she suffered as a child and some not very flattering moments she experienced as an adult. I could definitely see someone reading this book and starting their own journey discovering and dealing with their complex PTSD. Her voice is so strong and self aware. I also liked that she recognized her privilege when trying to find treatment for her C-PTSD. Reading about her relationship with her parents was heartbreaking. The ending made me happy though. I would highly recommend this book, especially if you're curious about how trauma can affect our brains because she does a good job explaining that and she cites her sources.
