I hate that I'm so addicted to a series with such ridiculous covers, but here we are.

I've got a free trial of Kindle Unlimited, so I'm getting through as many of these babies as I can. These are so fun to read and super short, which is nice. And Bruiser is hilarious! They've all been cute, but this was definitely my favorite of the bunch so far just for the laughs.

This book was so cute!! Several months ago I attempted to read this and failed miserably. First of all, I’m just not that into contemporary novels. Give me fantasy all day everyday. But everyone was raving about this book so much that I wanted to give it a try and for some reason, I just COULD NOT get into the story or the audiobook. There’s something about this narrator that bugs me, but I don’t really have a specific reason why. Something about the way she read it made it feel extra juvenile to me, so I ended up DNFing.

PLEASE DO NOT PANIC. I felt so guilty that I decided to give it another try. And I also maaaaaay have caved under the duress of a friend… but I’m super glad I did!! This book was SO ADORABLE and I ended up falling in love with Lara Jean and Peter K just like everyone else. Everything is just so cute. The characters, the story, the friendships, all of it. Sometimes you need some good contemporary fluff to put you in a good mood and this totally did the trick.
And that ending kind of killed me?? Talk about a cliffy. Thank god I’m reading these late because if I had to wait for book two to come out I would have gone nutters.
FINAL WORD
Such a sweet contemporary romance!! It’s fluffy and pink just like Lara Jean and Peter K can bring me cinnamon donuts any time.

It's so weird reading these books again after so long!!! My reread of the second book made me love it more while rereading this one made me like it a little less. What is happening?!?

I remember being obsessed with this book when I finished it the first time. I absolutely looooooooved the way it ended (which is still true) and I guess I kind of blocked out the beginning half over the years. This time around I can't deny how much of a douchebag Jace was in the beginning????? I know he was trying to protect Clary by pushing her away, but could he have been a bigger dick about it?? If you don't want Clary going to Alicante, then explain your reasons why TO HER FACE. Come up with an alternative plan to contact Ragnor Fell WITH HER instead of making decisions for her BEHIND CLARY'S BACK. Ugh. And that little speech he made about how he doesn't want Clary around because she ruins everything??? WTF?! NO HE DID NOT. I'd be so pissed. Even if he didn't mean it, there's no way I could forgive him as easily as Clary does. Throwing a plate at his head just isn't enough.
Everything else is just as magical as I remember. Malec is too adorable for words. Sebastian is still MAJORLY creepy and reading his scenes with Clary gave me the willies.

Still not over the death at the end (YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT *Sobs*) and watching Izzy mourn with Simon gets me in the feels every time!! And that ending scene with Clary and Jace at the lake?!? OH MY GOD. THE BEST. UGGGGGHHHHHHH.
FINAL WORD
My memory of this was a little too generous, but I friggin' love this book and it's still my favorite in the series!

GOD I love this series.
It’s been so long since I’ve read these, which is just a crime. And it’s weird what your memory can do to books over time. I’ve always felt underwhelmed by this second installment and I remember it being very transitionary into the third book. The only thing I really remembered going in was Clary and Simon’s FRIGGIN’ AWKWARD blink-and-you’ll-miss-it relationship and the big boat scene at the end.
This was so much better than I remembered though! I feel like I noticed a ton more smaller details that I missed the first time, like Valentine’s hair?? Apparently IT’S WHITE/BLONDE?????? I’ve spent a decade thinking it’s black, but WHATEVER. IT’S FINE. And can we talk about Luke? I’ve always loved Luke a lot, but for some reason I found myself loving him even more this time around??? He’s so cute and such a good non-dad to Clary, I have a little Luke crush!! I also loved the little comments Magnus makes to Alec all the time. The subtlety of their relationship is so adorable and I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH OKAY?!?!? MALEC IS MY OTP FOREVERRRR!

The brother and sister storyline between Jace and Clary is still freaking weird. I will ALWAYS think that was the most random and cheesy decision Cassie Clare could have made, but I love everything else so much that I don’t even care. And I can’t deny the drama and intrigue it creates. The emo tension between those two is off the charts in this book.
FINAL WORD
This was even better the second time around!! This series is everything. Two thumbs waaaaay up!

Well friends, A Wrinkle in Time is being made into a movie that’s only a couple weeks away from being released. Since I haven’t read this in FOR-EV-ER, I listened to the audiobook for a little brush up and I’m so glad I did! There was soooooooo much I didn’t remember (like, the entire thing) and I have a new appreciation for this book that I didn’t have before as a kid.

THE REHASH
Rumors have been spreading like mad. Meg and Charles Wallace’s father has been missing for way too long and the neighbors are starting to talk. As a scientist for the government, he left for a super secret, important mission and just never came back. He wrote their mother letters often, but they’ve slowly petered out and stopped completely. Meg is trying to be hopeful, but fears the worst.
Meanwhile, Meg and Charles have been having a rough time in school. As the children of genius parents, both kids are crippled with high expectations from their peers and their oddities give them a hard time. Charles Wallace doesn’t seem to mind so much, but Meg longs to be normal like her twin brothers Sandy and Dennys. She just wants to blend in and survive school—something that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for her.
When Meg, Charles, and their mother are up late one night, unable to sleep because of a storm, they get a visit from their new neighbor Mrs. Whatsit that changes everything. She appears to be an older, quirky, discombobulated woman, but it’s soon revealed that she’s much more. Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which are all there to gather the children on a grand adventure to save their father. With their help, Meg, Charles, and their new friend Calvin all face their greatest fears in the name of love.
THE GOOD
First of all, I absolutely LOVED Hope Davis’s performance in this audiobook and she did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. Each character had a distinct voice that fit perfectly with their personality and she even did a great job with all of the odd fantastical things like Mrs. Which’s unusual speaking voice.
It’s so interesting reading something as a child and then reading it again as an adult, and I won’t lie, a large part of why I loved this is simply because of nostalgia. But when I was younger, I simply took this all at face value. This was just a fun story of three friends on a crazy planet that want to save their father. Now it’s easy for me to see beyond that and read the deeper meaning that I couldn’t before. L’Engle was making a statement about the world, about humanity, and pouring in her hope for future generations.
I can definitely understand why this book wouldn’t be for everyone. I mean, if I went into greater detail about what happens in the later chapters of the book, I would straight up sound insane. To give you a better idea of this, Meg and her friends end up on another planet that has nice aliens on it and she starts calling one “Aunt Beast.” The words “lovingly” and “tentacles” are used in the same sentence more than once to describe these aliens. Is this book trippy as hell?? Oh yeah, but that’s kind of the magic of it. Kids don’t see the weird stuff—they see the love, the fun, and the hope.
Legitimately have no freaking idea how this going to made into a movie, but it’s with Disney, Oprah, and Chris Pine, so OBVIOUSLY I’m here for it.

THE UGLY
The only real problem I had with this book is hard to put into words. There were a few minor moments that felt kind of old-fashioned in their ideas?? Nothing that bad was really said or done, but it was enough to make me feel… uncomfortable??? That word seems a bit strong, but it’s something I definitely noticed. An example is when the kids are first learning about Mrs. Whatsit. They don’t know who she is yet and think she’s a homeless drifter that’s passing through the town. I think the phrase Meg uses to describe her is “neighborhood tramp” (tramp meaning vagabond) and her thoughts about this homeless person are so negative, it shook me up a little. Especially because Meg was JUST complaining about how she’s not accepted by her peers.
I don’t know, it’s nothing really major and didn’t effect my overall love of the book, but it felt worth mentioning.
FINAL WORD
This was, and still is, one of my favorite books and age hasn’t changed that at all. I have no idea how this crazy story will be made into a movie, but I absolutely love this book and it’s message of love.

This book was AWESOME!! I freaking loved this! Okay, let me lay this out for you. I’m a fantasy junkie. Dragons, witches, warlocks, fairies, werewolves—it’s all my jam. I’m less of a sci-fi fan and even less into mysteries and thrillers. Plus, books about science? HA! No. I went to art school for a reason people. To say I was hesitant about this book is an understatement. But I loved the movie and dinosaurs are the fu**ing best, so I went for it.
All I can say is, Crichton is a damn magician because not only was I able to follow all the complicated science-y stuff (that IS the technical term), but it was never boring and kept me on the edge of my seat.

THE REHASH
It starts to make sense, however, when we meet Dr. Alan Grant and his young assistant Dr. Ellie Sattler who are paleontologists working in Montana. They get a call from their boss and wealthy funder John Hammond, who invites them to his private island for a few days. He’s in need of their expert advice and he’s willing to pay them nicely for it. Thinking him nothing but an old, rich kook, they agree. What they find upon their arrival is nothing short of a miracle. Real dinosaurs!
Dr. Henry Wu has taken the blood out of fossilized mosquitoes and used it to clone dinosaurs. He’s found a way to repair any damaged DNA and bring dozens of different species back from the dead. Literally. Now there’s a whole park filled with dinosaurs and Hammond is ready to show the world his new tourist attraction. All the scientists that have come to visit are anxious about the dangers of these Wild animals, but Wu and Hammond are quick to assure them that safety precautions have been made. All the cloned dinosaurs are female and can’t breed. Everything is fenced in with strong, electric fencing. Every dinosaur is dependent on a specific enzyme that’s given to them by the caretakers and wouldn’t survive if they ever managed to escape. Everything seems to be accounted for, but Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler can’t escape their nervous anxiety about the whole thing.
When a bad storm suddenly falls over the island and they lose power, everything quickly crumbles. Apparently Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler weren’t nervous for nothing after all…
THE GOOD
GAH!! I love the way Crichton wrote this and I’m kind awed by him right now. So much nerding-out is happening.
I LOVE how he captured short bursts of moments that seem completely random, but eventually form a bigger picture over time. In the beginning it all feels a little chaotic. A man gets taken to a hospital and appears mauled, a girl gets attacked, a baby gets eaten… As you keep reading, however, you start to realize that there’s something bigger going on. Even after the reader knows about Jurassic Park and Hammond’s scheme, Crichton writes the same way. Most of the characters end up getting separated and spread out over the whole park, so he shows short bursts of each one—someone hiding from a T-Rex, the control room guys scrambling to get the power on, someone getting thrown into a tree. It all creates this undercurrent of anxiety and nervousness that was perfect for this book.
There’s also a CRAP TON of science in this story and I was completely shocked that I could follow most of it. When it comes to science, I know the bare minimum and it was never my favorite subject in high-school. Before diving into this, I was completely expecting to be confused an nod along, but that wasn’t the case! Everything was explained really well and broken down in understandable ways. I’ve heard Crichton was known for his extensive research and it definitely shows. I feel like I learned a lot without even trying!
Plus, there are dinosaurs guys. DINOSAURS. You can’t go wrong!

THE UGLY
I. HATE. LEX. I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER. Oh my god, I’ve never wanted to strangle a child so much in my life. Does she ever SHUT UP?!?!? ARGH. Even when I was young, I would have had the presence of mind to NOT COMPLAIN WHEN EVERYONE’S LIFE IS IN DANGER. The whole time they’re trying to make it back to civilization she’s all “I’m hungry” or “I’m tired, can you carry me?” BITCH. WE ALMOST JUST DIED. YOU WALKIN. Not gonna lie, a big part of me wanted her to eat something poisonous and keel over, just so I wouldn’t have to hear her talk anymore. I don’t remember her being that friggin’ annoying in the movie, but it’s been a while, so who knows. Tim was also a tad annoying and a bit of know-it-all, but at least he was helpful and kept his mouth closed most of the time.
That was really my only gripe with this book. There was already a lot going on, so I didn’t completely understand why Lex’s sour attitude was really necessary to the story. The little trio of Dr. Grant, Tim, and Lex were already trying to survive in the wilderness, make it back to the hotel, and avoid vicious dinos—did her uncanny ability to attract danger need to be added to the mix?!
I also had a hard time keeping track of all the characters. The ones I had strong feelings about were easy to keeps tabs on (*COUGH* Lex *COUGH*), but there were a lot of background scientists and workers that I kept confusing with others. More than once I thought someone had died, only to have them pop up again and discover I had them mistaken for someone else. This is my own problem though, which is what I get for listening to the audiobook instead of reading it.
FINAL WORD
This book was GREAT!! I’ve never been so frustrated and enjoyed it! And I learned a lot of stuff!! This book was completely thrilling and I loved every second.

Ahhhhhh I love this book! I’ve read it several times and it never gets old. And if you haven’t gotten a copy of the 10th anniversary edition, you should because it really enhanced the reading experience this time. I absolutely loved looking at all the beautiful illustrations while I was reading and the character portraits are GORGEOUS. It really painted everything in a new light for me this time around, which I thought was really awesome!
The characters in this book are so top-notch and I find myself falling even harder for all of them. I forgot how funny Simon is! He seriously has some of the best one-liners. And even though I already related to Clary the most out of everyone, I found myself relating to her even more this time around. I assumed that I would feel more disconnected as I got older, but somehow the opposite is true. She has a strength and determination that I really admire. The biggest change I noticed this time, though, is with Alec and Isabelle. To be honest, they completely bugged the crap out of me the first time I read this. I would think, do they have to be that rude? What is their glitch?? But now that I’ve gone through the series before, I can totally understand where they’re coming from. That scene where Alec confronts Clary about how she’s putting Jace in danger? Ugh! Completely broke my heart this time!! Poor Alec.

Plus, I can’t believe how well this universe is constructed. Recently I took a trip to New York for my birthday (apparently we stayed near Hotel Dumort. Who knew?) and all the descriptions felt so real. It felt like I could go find the institute and touch it. Clare has done an amazing job building this world for her characters.
FINAL WORD
If you haven’t read this book yet, then I HIGHLY recommend it. I had so much fun rereading this. The ending is admittedly crazy soap opera dramatic, but it’ll definitely keep you on your toes…

Ummmmm this book was SO. AWESOME. It's been days since I read this and my head is still spinning. So much action jammed into one book! Every friggin page had something going on. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.

The plot of this is super clever and intriguing and I love the way it was put together. We uncover little splices of information while piecing together what happened to them in the past and it made me just as desperate as The Losers to find out what was going on. Plus, the art is just friggin' amazing. Jock did an awesome, kick-ass job and—I don't know if this was just me (a graphic novel noob)—but the panels seemed super dynamic and eye-catching.
Also, AISHA IS THE MOST BAD ASS LADY EVER??? I. Freaking. Love. Her. I want to BE her. Watching her beat the crap out of those douchebags to protect those women had me fist pumping in the air and yelling. And OF COURSE, Jensen is just the friggin' best. I love that he was able to bring comedic relief in between all the tense action. He had me stitches MULTIPLE times. "In undies? Me? No way, Jose! I'm wearin' A HAT!"
FINAL WORD
HELL YES!! This graphic novel was kick-ass awesome and I can't wait to start the next one to see what happens!

I can't believe I've lived this long without reading this book. It's been on my to-read list for YEARS and I've always considered it a classic despite never having seen a word of it. On Overdrive I have a million audiobooks saved on my wish list (because of course I do) with Interview with the Vampire among them, though it was never available and the hold list was always too long for me to bother. Imagine my surprise when I checked back randomly a few days ago and saw it was AVAILABLE. Obviously I jumped on that shit. The only word that I can think of to describe the experience of this audiobook—because it's totally an experience—is entrancing. Anne Rice and Simon Vance put me under a spell.
THE GOOD
Man, this was a hard review to write. I was so overwhelmed when this was over, that I had to think on it a few days. For an audiobook, fifteen hours is a pretty average length, but it felt like SO MUCH was packed into that time frame. An entire lifetime, which is the whole point. So many things happen that I couldn't include in the above summary because no one would read this damn post if it was a million miles long. There's never a dull moment and so much edge-of-your-seat excitement that you'll never be bored.
The writing is AMAZING and Anne Rice just shot up to one of my favorite authors with this book alone. It's completely thought-provoking and I found myself thinking about it for days afterward. Framing the story of Louis's past with the interview dialogue happening in the present was genius and let us, as an outsider, relate to "the boy" as we mimicked his reactions. The fantastical ideas thrown at us about vampires are hard to digest at times, and his confused questions to Louis help draw the reader further into this new world. Plus, in retrospect it's hard for me to believe there wasn't an ounce of sex in this book because it was SENSUAL AS HELL. Rice somehow managed to create an undercurrent of sexuality for the whole novel without anyone even kissing. That, my friends, is increadible.
And this Simon Vance guy?? Holy crap he was good. Somehow he managed to manipulate his voice into a distinct, separate personality for each character and the french accent he uses for Louis is perfect. I can see why he's won awards for his work, dude deserves it. Listening to him talk made the whole novel feel more like an old radio drama, and I definitely mean that as a compliment.
THE UGLY
Okay, this isn't necessarily a negative remark, but since I'm lacking in bad things to say about Interview With a Vampire, I'm just sticking it here.
When I fist started listening to this, I poked around on here and was shocked to see barely above average reviews. Like I said, this book was always categorized as a classic in my mind and I was confused about the mediocre-ish response. Now that I've gone through the whole thing, I can understand it a little more.
Anne Rice's style is very heavy on the descriptions. She spends so much time being verbose about specific moments that it's shocking to learn how much time is actually going by in the story. What feels like a few years of Louis's vampire life turns out to be sixty. I can see how this might turn some people off, especially if they're reading the physical book. These detailed descriptions Rice uses work well for audio, contributing to the old radio drama feel I was talking about earlier, but it could definitely be construed as boring to some.
FINAL WORD
This novel is DA BOMB and the audiobook is a masterpiece. I highly recommend this to anyone who rolls their eyes at Twilight like me and wants to stick with the classics.
