The Laughing Listener

Reread February 2018
Format: 1oth Anniversary Hardcover
Overall Rating: 5 Stars

Ahhhhhh I love this book! I’ve read it several times and it never gets old. And if you haven’t gotten a copy of the 10th anniversary edition, you should because it really enhanced the reading experience this time. I absolutely loved looking at all the beautiful illustrations while I was reading and the character portraits are GORGEOUS. It really painted everything in a new light for me this time around, which I thought was really awesome!

The characters in this book are so top-notch and I find myself falling even harder for all of them. I forgot how funny Simon is! He seriously has some of the best one-liners. And even though I already related to Clary the most out of everyone, I found myself relating to her even more this time around. I assumed that I would feel more disconnected as I got older, but somehow the opposite is true. She has a strength and determination that I really admire. The biggest change I noticed this time, though, is with Alec and Isabelle. To be honest, they completely bugged the crap out of me the first time I read this. I would think, do they have to be that rude? What is their glitch?? But now that I’ve gone through the series before, I can totally understand where they’re coming from. That scene where Alec confronts Clary about how she’s putting Jace in danger? Ugh! Completely broke my heart this time!! Poor Alec.

Bless his heart.

Plus, I can’t believe how well this universe is constructed. Recently I took a trip to New York for my birthday (apparently we stayed near Hotel Dumort. Who knew?) and all the descriptions felt so real. It felt like I could go find the institute and touch it. Clare has done an amazing job building this world for her characters.

FINAL WORD

If you haven’t read this book yet, then I HIGHLY recommend it. I had so much fun rereading this. The ending is admittedly crazy soap opera dramatic, but it’ll definitely keep you on your toes…
