I had forgotten how much I liked this book. Jason and Nathaniel's character development. A whole 40+ pages of just Anita, Richard and Jean-Claude as exhausting as it was it so rarely happens in this series. A bunch of new, exotic vampires, including Wicked Truth, whom I enjoy. Zebrowski in charge. A deeper look at the vampire church and how things work. A lot of deep interpersonal talks that I'm still a little envious of. The fact that they can talk to each other about stuff like this even when things are not great is amazing. Most people don't have these kinds of talks with friends or lovers a d they should.
Finally some alone time! Lol, we get Micah's back story or some of it here.
The ballet being so little on stage in this book is still a disappointment. Even the reason for it and the issue during and after with its leader was blah. Otherwise, this is really the first book where the sex outnumbers the rest of the plot. And no police or necromancy work. We get more glimpses of Marmee Noir and a bunch of new vampires and lyncanthropes. I had forgotten how interesting Auggie was. His character is the most modern of the vampires even though he is old. Honestly, I forgot all about the baby scare after reading this the first time. It was an interesting story dynamic. It put everyone of the well known characters in a new light. I loved Anita's by gynecologist btw. Reading Incubus Dreams I was trying to remember why we no longer like Ronnie. And now I remember. No lie Anita went through an emotional roller coaster in 3 days in this book. Lastly, I'll say I like the intro of the lions though not so much the local ones. They feel shoehorned in.
Wow, just wow. This revelation makes things much more complex. I thought they would keep the focus on that country and the island like most epic fantasy novels would but there's a whole world that can be focused on. And my glimpse at volume 23 tells me they will. But my guess is season 3 of the anime will end here.
Just excitement for the first look at the Harlequin. It was also nice to see Anita and Edward's worlds collide. Rereading this series I realized that there's a lot of off screen conversations I would have liked to witness. Stuff that did not include Anita even though it may have been about her.
I always forget what this book is about because the name doesn't give me any clues. The ardeur and Marmee Noir make a big and random appearance fucking with everything. So this book doesn't come to the conclusion you expect. Or at least the conclusion seems much less important to focus on or remember in my case. What happened to Jason was a complete surprise all over again because I forgot about it. I also think this was the first book that ever bothered me in a triggering way in this series. And since I know what the next book will mostly be, same for that. Anyway, before that the character development of Jason and his relationships was very fun to watch. And though the town roots and his that affects the trip seem ridiculously unbelievable, their are too many places like this in the US for me to comfortably blow it off as unrealistic.
Rereading this one for the first time. It will be the same for the others in the series after this. Anyway, I must have been really triggered by the sex scene at the end where Vittorio rolled Anita and all the tigers because that's mostly what I remember about this book. A little bit of the psychic SWAT team but that's it. Rereading this I realize that scene was much much shorter and had less of an impact on the plot than my memory told me it did. I love so much about this book now. The psychic SWAT team is still super cool and impressive. The 4 supernatural Marshalls together is always an interesting dynamic. They are all such different people that they bring something different to each conversation and interaction yet they work so well together. And its always interesting when Bernardo and Otto have differing opinions on regular stuff. Ones you wouldn't expect. Winter and Truth got some more face time too which makes me happy. Max, Bibiana and Victor are interesting. Actually how closely Max works with the locals is new and innovative in this world. Lastly, I don't know how Anita learned to deal with all the sexual harassment and just straight sexism while dealing with the police. Its been there since book one and only gotten worse since word got out about her boyfriends. I don't think I could handle it.
So happy to have Nicky on board. He's a character I wasn't expecting. No one was since this was a surprise book and storyline. But he's become a favorite of mine.
All the tigers. Harlequin's return. Haven's death. And sexual contact with women. So much to unpack with this book. But it moved at a good pace. Still no clue why its called Bullet though.
