The narrative is fascinating and consistently holds your attention. The free form way that the author wrote the narrator (a mountain lion) feels truly authentic at times. I did struggle with one scene not feeling realistic, but overall I think we truly get a look at what an animal might be thinking, if that animal had grown up watching and learning from people at a distance. The ending is perfect.

"I'm Afraid of Men" by the same author is wonderful and I fully recommend reading that one. Unfortunately, this book doesn't have the same emotional depth or the same unique, boundary pushing concepts as the other book. I felt like the book was a bit too unorganized and jumped between thoughts or didn't transition into the next topic smoothly. I love the other book, so I'm not gonna write her off and will hopefully find another book of hers that i like.
I watched the TV show and it was great. Clearly someone capable took this book series and (1) filled in the plot holes, (2) removed the clique, (3) added depth to the characters, (4) removed stereotypes, etc. Etc. Etc.
I would suggest skipping this one.

An essential read for every human being. In only 85 pages, she details the depth of masculinity, both emotionally and academically, from the perspective of someone how has seen numerous shades of the same coin. I felt wholly distinct, as her life is far from my mine, but I also felt seen. I'm excited to read more of her work!

This book is well written, interesting and the character/plot felt authentic. But, it also ultimately felt boring. Perhaps it's because I was in the foster system and I'm disillusioned with any idea of the justice system being a force for true good, but I just felt like the story didn't offer anything new to me. I didn't feel challenged as a reader, but I think others likely will be.

The children are the heart of this and the first book. Without them to anchor the story and make the book come to life, the reader would be left with a underdeveloped novel. Specially one that struggles to show genuine creativity (none of the magic is original), falls short of a strong or consistent plot, and is far too "tell, not show". I ended up rating it the same as first book. Though they don't have the same strengths and weaknesses, both ultimately fall short.
