I don’t know how D.K Hood does it but this is book 12 and it is still such a great series. I love the main characters and I really enjoy getting to know them more with every book. They’re just so lovable. I mean they live in a terrifying town that attracts all the murderers but they fight crime so well. This book starts with a bang and kept me hooked until the very end. As always, the murders are brutal and the hunt for the bad guy is full of twists and turns. Hood really knows how to set the scene and this was one tense and chilling read. Parts of it definitely gave me goosebumps. The suspense builds right to the end and I really wasn’t sure how or even if Jenna was going to get out of the mess. It really is a nail-biting read. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to sink their teeth into a crime series with a lovable crime fighting team, gritty plot, and gory murders. This is book 3 in the series and there is enough back info to read as a stand alone but I think reading it in order helps you understand Ellie and her relationships better. The Burning Girls is a good pace and has some great main characters which add a lot to the story. It’s a nice easy read but I wouldn’t say it’s top of my crime thriller list. The link between the victims is interesting and a bit different but I did guess one of the main twists. I do like seeing how Ellie adapts and moves on with everything that is thrown at her. She's pretty badass although she suffers way too many head injuries. If you’re looking for a crime thriller that’s not overly complicated and easy to pick up whenever you’ve got a few minutes then definitely check this one out. This wasn't what I was expecting from this book but it was a gripping read full of so many emotions. I expected to hate Chrissie but I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. It's a dark story but it's written well. We get to see the plot unfold from the POV of 8 year old Chrissies and adult Julia as she tries to move on and be a good mother. The chapters from the child's POV were written so well it really felt like I was listening to a child. It's a tough and heartbreaking read but I couldn't stop thinking about it.
This dark crime thriller full of twists and turns is usually a recipe for success for me but this one just fell a little bit short. There is a lot going on and a lot of technical terms and descriptions which are a bit distracting. Eva is your usual badass female cop who feels like she needs to prove herself and then goes off on her own. I thought one of the twists and the motive was pretty predictable but it seemed to take forever for the police to catch on. That being said it is still a good read with gory murders and loads of twists and turns to keep you reading. I enjoyed Eva's character and I felt the tension of whether she could trust her new team or not. I would definitely read more in the series.
Another great addition to the series. I would highly recommend reading these in order so that you understand Madison and Nate's past as well as their current friendship. This is Madison's first day back at work after putting her life back together and she's thrown in at the deep end with an abandoned baby and missing mother. Not only does she have to learn to trust her team but she has to prove that she is worthy of having her job back. The twists and turns of this investigation had me hooked. Nate also has another heartbreaking experience in his quest to find the person responsible for his Fiances murder which adds to the suspense of the book. The characters and the gritty investigations sucked me in and I didn't want to put it down. I hope we get to see more of this duo. This is a new series for me and I will be going back to read book 1 asap. I loved Bernie’s character and she has a great team, well, apart from the insufferable DCI Worthless of course. Every scene he was in made me want to roll my eyes for Bernie. The chemistry between Bernie and her colleague Anderson also added a bit of lightness to the gory murder. This book kept me guessing and I was hooked until the very end. I definitely had no idea who the bad guy was which is always a plus. I can’t wait for book 3. Another great addition to the series. I do recommend reading them in order though to understand all the characters pasts and how they’ve grown. In this book, Josie is still dealing with her grief from the last book. She is a lot more vulnerable but it’s actually made her seem more human. Parts of it are a very emotional read though. With regards to the case, there are so many suspects and so many twists and turns that I kept changing my mind about who I thought it was. I had no idea. Considering there were so many people involved, once I got into a rhythm it was pretty easy to keep them straight. I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
