As much as I love a good retelling, especially of classic stories, I didn't love this one. I did enjoy the alterations and new interpretations of the characters, especially Jane's, but it was the ending that really took away some of my enjoyment. If the Bertha character wasn't the ultimate villain, I think I would have liked it more. I just have a problem with villainizing her, as I usually think of Bertha as an unfortunate victim and making her actually vindictive and borderline insane was not a change I loved. I like the twist, but not the twist itself, if that makes sense.
Again, I love a retelling, and this one I enjoyed more. It wasn't a book that a lot really happened in, and the stark differences in the linear plot was interesting. I did feel like a bit of a dummy, because at one point there's an admission by a character that's basically left unsaid, and my interpretation of it was completely different than it actually was which really changed how I read the book. Once I got to the end, and realized my mistake, I wished I had picked up on that when I originally read it! It made me like the book a lot more, and gave a really great backstory to an otherwise bland and boring character from The Great Gatsby.
Talk about a gut-punch. This whole book made me so uncomfortable and upset, and all I wanted to do the whole time was have a really deep discussion with Enchanted and help her however I could. This is such an important book to read, especially for teenage girls, because it really makes a story like this more relatable and helps you see how things like the R Kelly situation happen, and can hopefully keep them from happening again.
I was so worried this book wouldn't live up to the hype, and thankfully my worries were for nothing! I loved Addie LaRue and her story, even if it left me a little devastated. The writing was beautiful, and the inclusion of a character that both you and Addie can't help but be drawn to, even if you shouldn't be, is fascinating. I will remember Addie LaRue for a very long time.
This was an interesting YA, which I read because of how much I loved Kerri Maniscalco's Stalking Jack the Ripper series. While I enjoyed this book, I definitely like her other series better. This one had a really interesting magic system, and the storyline was compelling, I just didn't like the characters or the mystery as much as I did in her other series. I will read the sequel when it comes out, though, because that cliffhanger definitely hooked me!
I'm such a sucker for a good rom-com, and this one was fun. Both of the characters were great and the pay-off for their relationship and how the book ended was well-earned. I don't really know what would make me like it more, but I really liked this one!
This was one of those newer classics that I've wanted to read for a long time, and finally got around to doing it. I liked it a lot, mostly because I'm a sucker for a retelling, and the details that Rhys chose to expand from the original novel I found fascinating (how Rochester changed her name to Bertha gutted me!). I only wish we had actually heard more of Antionette's story from her perspective, although I understand Rochester's inclusion. If there had just been less of him, and more of her telling her story, I think it would have made this even better.
I didn't really know what this book was before I read it, and while I enjoyed it it wasn't my favorite. I liked the stark differences in the characters and how they complimented each other. Each character's journey was necessary, and I loved how they learned to understand and rely on each other. The ending felt very unnecessary, though. I wasn't prepared for how it ended, which made my enjoyment definitely go down.
This was actually my first non-Narnia CS Lewis, and overall I really liked it! Such an interesting examination of how we love people and how those different loves play out differently in our lives. How those loves connect to our love of God was really interesting as well. I really enjoyed Lewis's writing style and didn't expect him to be so funny! I will definitely have to read some of his other non-Narnia works!
I haven't enjoyed a YA fantasy as much as this one in a long time! It was such a beautifully developed world, and the mythology in it was fascinating. The two characters were written so well and I just loved how language was used to show their growth. This was a really enjoyable book and I'm so glad I read it!
