Super cute premise! I love the banter between Aiden and Lucie and all of the character relations in this story. Grew to really love these characters and I thought Aiden and Lucie had touching character growth. For all of my fellow hopeless romantics, this one’s a great read.

Graphic: Sexual content
Minor: Terminal illness
There are a couple chapters where the sexual tension escalates, but it’s in Chapter 27 where Aiden and Lucie have a very *fun* night 😉
Terminal illness warning: A huge element of the story is that a big reason for Aiden’s personality and distancing tactics is because his mother was diagnosed with cancer three times within ten years, the first time being when he was 8. He talks about how this affected him and some specific moments of his mom during her struggling moments with the illness. However, she survived all three bouts of cancer.

ADORED!!!! So looking forward to checking out the others in the Meant To Be Series.
As a massive Tangled fan and fairly new to the romance/romantasy genre, I had an absolute blast reading this. I will admit, I was really hesitant buying this because of how controversial brand-type books can be. They don’t always end up being well written and can have a lot of issues.
Now, for me personally, this is a top 10 book for me. It is adorable, had the heart of the film in mind, and left me with butterflies. For a lighthearted romance based on one of my favorite Disney princesses/films, it was exactly what I needed right now. It’s also great for a very light spice level. For the audience it’s targeted for, I think it did its job perfectly!

This does follow the premise of Ren (Rapunzel) haven’t been kidnapped and hidden away for 20 years, and does become important near the end of the book.
Physical intimacy: There is a scene in Chapter 23 with Ren and Flitz (Flynn Ryder) where they start making out in a hot tub. However, this book is very low on the spice scale, and does not get super explicit or sexual.

A great fantasy novel with some romantic elements (I say this cause I wouldn’t quite consider this a romantasy exclusive novel). I really enjoyed the world building and the details that went into it, and felt like there were certain plot moments I didn’t see coming which was fun. I’m very curious to see how these characters develop in the next book (hopefully soon), because I have a lot of questions and thoughts. I also appreciate giving a FMC strength and depth and not losing that part of herself by the end like I’ve found in some other novels I’ve read recently.
Please note, if you have under 16, or at the very least not in high school, my suggestion is to wait a bit due to the gore and torture aspects (see warnings for further clarification).

Graphic: Gore, Torture, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Slavery, Vomit
The main character and her family are pirates and live in a piracy world. So, with that said, there is a lot of descriptions of gore, torture, murder, and death incorporated into the fantastical elements and plot points. If you are squeamish are those types of descriptions, I would hesitate on reading this. Of course, it is a YA novel, but some of it is honestly pretty gory.
Examples are below:
Heads on spikes, hanging and descriptions of the bodies, SOOO much torture especially with magic involved, injuries from the magical monsters, explanations of torture endured by Aster (FMC) on the Deathwail,…. I could go on

For all of my fellow theater kids interested in reading this book: They were NOT kidding when they said the book is vastly different from the musical adaptation. Outside of the character name and maybe 2 general plot lines, the story is a whole different world.
With that being said, I did enjoy reading it for the story that it is. It gave me a new insight into Elphaba’s story, and felt like I was experiencing her story for the very first time. I did struggle focus-wise with a couple of sections, especially at the beginning before the story moves to Shiz, but otherwise, it was a great read.

Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Child death, Gore, Murder, Classism
Minor: Death, Death of parent
Sexual content: There are a couple of sections that get very graphic, particularly in the speakeasy where a group of character watch a tease show and a secondary character gets heavily involved in intense sexual acts with a Tiger and woman. . The book has some lesser explicit content throughout and is not suited for children/early teens.

Very cute! The writing style is simple and fun, the characters are super lovable (in my opinion), and it’s overall great for lighthearted read.
I will say too, there were moments I was worried that the story was going to fall towards stereotypical plot devices, and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t.

Not my personal favorite, but it’s a solid play and has some lovely moments. It’s very much the type of show that you have to let go of trying to understand what’s happening and just listen. The way it’s structured is a bit more on the abstract side as well.

An extremely moving play with a range of emotions and explorations. It brings me joy seeing more works created by and for Native people. Having only read it, I would love to see this play live. 💛

SO GOOD!! Extremely thought-provoking, relevant, and complex. This is my first Kimberly Belflower play and I love her writing style. The story moves in a way that you don’t want to put it down until the very end. Also explores its theme in a way that doesn’t come off as preachy and is instead very conversation and authentic. It is totally one of those plays that has you talking about it for days after.
Also, I absolutely loved how the kids are written. As someone in their early 20s and has worked with different ages of high schoolers, the dialogue and behavior is so well portrayed. I feel like some writers struggle with giving kids and teens an authentic voice, and I didn’t feel that once with Belflower’s writing.

Graphic: Sexual content, Sexual harassment
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Cursing, Pedophilia, Rape, Sexual assault, Toxic relationship, Gaslighting
Minor: Racial slurs, Suicidal thoughts
While the majority of the characters are around 16, this is not a play meant to be put on for an actual high school production.
The play takes place in 2018, 2 years after the explosion of the Me Too movement in 2016. With that said, if you are not in a place where you can read about sexual assault, harassment, and adult/minor relations, it’s probably best to skip this read. While nothing is physically expressed, it is a core part of the storyline and is consistently talked about in depth and with no filtering.
Visually, there is only one physical moment onstage where there is non-consensual contact: Lee kisses Raelynn, both high schoolers, without her consent in Scene 3. Lee is also a generally aggressive character, although we only see this at its highest in Scene 3.

Very cute read! I had picked this up wanting something light-hearted and wholesome, and that’s exactly what I got.
I agree with some of the reviews that have talked about run-on sentences and a lot of characters to juggle, but I found myself letting that go and sinking into the story more the farther I read. I’m also someone who tends to go for fast-paced reads, so, for me, it was a bit slow. Once everything was established and the conflicts started kicking in, though, that’s when I got more invested and started to enjoy the story a lot more.
If you’re looking for a cozy, easy read with fantasy/witch elements (and the writing style isn’t too distracting for you lol), I recommend checking this out.

While there is a driving plot, I feel like this show is very much focused around human connection and flaws. It’s intense, emotional, and has a big twist near the end. I also enjoyed exploring the question of what is in our control. What is our choice versus the effects of our surroundings?
