A great fantasy novel with some romantic elements (I say this cause I wouldn’t quite consider this a romantasy exclusive novel). I really enjoyed the world building and the details that went into it, and felt like there were certain plot moments I didn’t see coming which was fun. I’m very curious to see how these characters develop in the next book (hopefully soon), because I have a lot of questions and thoughts. I also appreciate giving a FMC strength and depth and not losing that part of herself by the end like I’ve found in some other novels I’ve read recently.
Please note, if you have under 16, or at the very least not in high school, my suggestion is to wait a bit due to the gore and torture aspects (see warnings for further clarification).

Graphic: Gore, Torture, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Slavery, Vomit
The main character and her family are pirates and live in a piracy world. So, with that said, there is a lot of descriptions of gore, torture, murder, and death incorporated into the fantastical elements and plot points. If you are squeamish are those types of descriptions, I would hesitate on reading this. Of course, it is a YA novel, but some of it is honestly pretty gory.
Examples are below:
Heads on spikes, hanging and descriptions of the bodies, SOOO much torture especially with magic involved, injuries from the magical monsters, explanations of torture endured by Aster (FMC) on the Deathwail,…. I could go on
