I originally have this a 4.75 because the scientific talks were sometimes hard for me to wrap my brain around. And some parts I feel went longer than they needed to

But I may give this the full score after I sit on it some more

I literally almost cried at the end. I don’t cry after reading books but I definitely felt the sting of “is that tears?”

I’m excited to see how they make this into a movie because I feel like if it’s done right, it’ll be really cool

I didn’t think I’d be that attached to a dog sized rock alien and a science teacher trying to save their planets but here I am

Months later update: Screw it, I’m updating it to a 5/5

For my first nonfiction book that I’ve read since college it was an interesting read. I kind of appreciated the forward by a religious member talking about preconceived notations that can hinder a person reading it - scientific, logic or spiritual back ground

My mom (who is 62) told me this book scared the shit out of her when she read it. It most likely was when it first came out. I didn’t find it as terrifying as she remembers but it still gave me some chills

It’s hard to criticize someone this happened to in real life because humans react differently to trauma and scary situations

Not that I did, but damn George made me want to DNF this from how frustrating he was

This was a fun little read. I would definitely recommend this to other people. The only reason I gave it a somewhat lower score was because sometimes I couldn’t fully wrap my head around how Christopher was thinking but it wasn’t a bad thing. I think it was very well written, just hard to wrap my head around

The journey to London had me so worried

And also, I’m wondering if it was actually Toby he brought home

It wasn’t bad! It wasn’t the greatest horror I’ve read in the many I’ve read over the last few months. I enjoyed it. There were obviously some weird disconnects between the original Swedish and the English it was translated to - like some idioms and choices of words

If I wasn’t exhausted last night I probably would have read it over the course of two days. So I mean, that’s something at least. And yeah, I’d recommend it to people. It’s definitely got a good mix of mystery and horror

*sigh*

Okay, this book isn’t bad but it took me getting about 60% through the book before I hit the “ooh I can’t put it down!” feeling

Scout, while I’m glad they were a NB protagonist/POV my GOD were they annoying. Part of me wishes that this was from Kieran’s POV because he had a better head on his shoulders

But Pumpkin - the precious little kitty - stole the show. He was great. Also he has little booties. And honestly the most soul catching scene is in that last 40% when they reach the last area for the cache

This is now the second book from Donlea that I’ve read. I really liked the first one and now that I want to read the rest. With a book that goes between a couple of different POVs, this flows really well. It’s not really a twist in a way a lot of horror books have twists but once the evidence is in front of you, you can piece things together. I think it was still awesome

I definitely felt for Alex because she obviously had some trauma that families involved with tragedies have and the true crime fanatics make me happy I’m not fucking insane about things. I just like reading about good mysteries and piecing stuff together

Plus, the fact that Donlea actually thanked some MDs and a detective to get facts/info right about what he wrote about is *chefs kiss*

Okay…so, this book was an interesting read if for no other reason than the “Lovecraft” part of the name was way way back burner to the actual plot of the book (update from the future: I now understand Lovecraft and Cosmic horror are interchangeable, and the title makes more sense)

There are some racist white men who run a group similar to the masons but are more…I wouldn’t call them religious but also just…crazy? I don’t know, it’s weird

There were definitely some horror aspects to it and Horace’s section did legitimately scare me more than I thought it would

But, it’s not a bad read. Just, know once you get past the George/Montrose chapter it’s going to crawling in pacing…ugh…

I mean it wasn’t bad. Followed 3 people. One of them pissed me off, one felt really flat and the other one I liked. I guess there are three books in the series

But I’m good…
