Our protagonist is a self proclaimed sociopath and has her mind set on getting revenge on the man who ruined her best friend’s life. That sentence alone should entice you to give this novel a read. I fell head over heels for Jane and her quirky, somewhat disturbing behavior and guarantee you will too.
With an imperfect protagonist who I absolutely loved, this novel deserves nothing short of five stars. Yes, Queenie is problematic, but that’s what made her so realistic. Put this one on your to-read list and experience Queenie’s discovery of self-worth.
I was skeptical about this novel until I got to the ending. Totally unpredictable, but satisfactory to say the least. On that note, I wish that the rest of the story was as attention griping as the last 30 pages or so. I wouldn’t categorize this novel as a thriller, as many have, but rather a women’s lit/drama. Would recommend if you’re into that kind of writing. *A note to potential readers - domestic violence/sexual abuse are staunch topics in this book. If that conjures up bad feelings — I would skip this one.*
I was disappointed with this book because I enjoyed Flynn’s Gone Girl and Dark Places tremendously. I never really liked Camille, the protagonist, and found many of her actions throughout the novel disturbing. I’m not giving up on Flynn though and I hope her next novel is better than this one.
As a psychological thriller, this book is pretty good. But, as a novel, it was atrocious. To make up for this contradiction, I have decided to give it three stars - meaning it was so-so. I don't regret my decision to read Larbalestier's work and would even be open to trying her writing again sometime in the future, but the plot for this one was so boring until the last third of the novel. Her character progressions were passable at best and Che, our protagonist, was likable, but not likable enough to applaud Larbalestier on this area of her writing. For those of you who enjoy a slower paced psychological thriller, this one is for you. But for those who are more like me and enjoy a faster paced thriller, I do not recommend.
A quick, heartbreaking read. I look forward to reading more of Ng’s work in the future. Her ability to create such realistic characters who grow throughout the novel is noteworthy and ultimately made me feel like it would be an injustice to give this book anything less than 5 stars.
Wow! A five star story knocked down to four stars because I had trouble keeping up with the narration. The story is told from three different women, all crucial voices in this plot. The ending was crazy and even though I had my suspicions, I was still thoroughly surprised with the answers it revealed. Highly recommend!
I was pleasantly surprised with this novel! Rader-Day’s writing is incredible and I can’t believe she has not received more attention for her work. This was a terrific thriller with an ending that I did not see coming.
