Reading this but just thinking "man...I should rewatch The Untamed again, it's so good"
hopeful
mysterious
slow-paced
This is a really interesting manga, in that, it feels like some seminal work due to its size and potential (and, genuinely, there is some very good ideas in here) but it just...isn't. Like it feels like nobody has read this, nobody saw the movie, and those who saw the movie certainly didn't like it.
It feels a shame, really, because there's so much in this to like but an absurd amount of time is spent talking about unbelievably boring things, and not in a way where it feels like you're getting into the minutiae of the characters and seeing them as whole people, as much as it feels like you're watching characters perform the trope (albeit realistic for their age) that is predictable and ultimately dull.
The things to like, however, is Nanako. I simply love Nanako, I love robot characters and I love her very much, thank you! I think her design is great, I love the conflict of not being able to confide in her because she is a robot and thus compelled to tell the truth, I loved the discussions about AI lying and what that implied, and I loved how she chose to keep her memories and be separated forever . THAT IS SO COMPELLING! SO WHY WAS I SLOGGING THROUGH THIS THING?!
I don't think Break of Dawn is like some hidden manga that people gotta check out but I do think it has the foundation of something good that was kind of squandered. Imagine if Naoki Urasawa wrote it instead...sigh, well, anyways, Nanako thank you for making it like sort of worth it.
And yes, before you ask, I will watch the shitty movie where Nanako looks awful, don't worry. I'm nothing if not a completionist. Anyways I'll be looking forward to that cock and ball torture for sure!

Tactical cupids is so big-brained, this is what yuri was meant to be--superb! Also just a great art style and flow, sincerely hope the manga won't get cancelled!
I actually liked this a lot more than I was expecting! Interesting introspective snapshot of being a kid at that age where everything feels awkward and weird. I especially enjoyed seeing the difference between Thailand and America and how Kathy grew up in an "American bubble" while in Thailand--that's not something I have experience with and it was cool to learn about!
Def can feel the Hilda and Adventure Time inspo coming off ths thing! Not bad at all, but a bit underwhelming with almost overwhelming illustrations at time, some of the pages are very busy which is a stylistic choice I understand and respect but not one I prefer, particularly when in color.
Speaking of color--super gorgeous colors in this! Sign language is one of those things things that is deceptively difficult to illustrate despite being a visual language, because it really relies on movement which is hard to show in a book. It's genuinely hard to strike that balance-- I also was a bit confused on what was sign/speech due to the many colors used for boxes and it wasn't always super obvious

The thing about Black Butler is you had to be there for the Black Butler renaissance of the 2010s, particularly on tumblr dot com. The manga itself though? In this year of 2024 there is so many manga that have now been translated that finding a better story (for me, now an adult) is much easier than it was back then (when I was like 12).
I kind of struggle with a lot of 2000s shoujo-esque manga because the pages are just SUPER busy with a bunch of words with kinda ugly translation textboxes that are too small but still, it IS Black Butler which comes with some serious nostalgia so my rating is prob a bit more generous than if I had never seen it before.

This book series is so damn strange, like the Chainsaw Man effect is real but I'm all about it. A lot of stuff seems to happen "off screen" in these books but for some reason I'm not bothered by it, in fact it's kind of fun to feel like we keep meeting our main characters again and they're different every time.
Similar to his earlier work there is times where I just have No Fucking Idea what is happening in the panels though overall I am enjoying the weirdo Choujin X experience.
Also making Tokio even taller and hunched over was 100% the right move
It is a shame maybe the funniest joke in the whole manga to me is hidden on the final page of the extras: "Kurohara, let's train your reflexes"

"I was an advocate for biodiversity and climate mitigation. Many of the absences did hurt. Yet those hurts were brief, and I got on. And part of me, the small secret part that I didn't like very much, looked down on those who couldn't."
There is a lot about this book I really like, the concepts of resurrection were great and I really could find myself identifying with Ruby as I too am a biologist and, despite everything, I also find myself able to "get on" as it were. Hard to say whether that's a good thing or not, but it's the truth of it. I really liked the idea of Grief as a syndrome of sort, a syndrome that both denotes you as sane for mourning such a massive loss and also turns you into socially insane.
I wish some parts of this book got more room to breathe and expand on the ideas but it was still a really interesting read!
I did not realize the random book I pulled off the shelf was 2002 yaoi but like. It is indeed that vibe!
It’s wildly problematic but I already said it’s 2002 yaoi so like wtf are you expecting?

Not bad but def the authors should have a word with their editor cause I caught typos and dropped words which always takes me out of a book to be sure
