A big reduction in size from the previous volume, but the suspense was top-notch. It's fun watching Lestat grow as a character.

Funny in parts, but mostly traumatizing and stressful to listen to.

This book is 4% science, 96% academic drama.

Panek is not a very skilled writer and his cast of characters is near indistinguishable from each other (with the exception of the fabulous Vera Rubin) which makes it impossible to care for the drama since I could barely keep track of which person was on which competing team. This was all the more frustrating since I didn't pick this up to read about people trying to out-publish each other; I wanted science.

Surprisingly entertaining for such an old book. I love that the dad believed in the strangeness of the shrinking house before the daughter did. More fun than the Borrowers for sure!

This book is the perfect palate cleanser to YA fantasy fans like yours truly. Each chapter starts out with a brief blurb of whatever insane thing is happening to the "indie kids" (ie, your heroes in the average YA fantasy) but the real story is about the normal kids just living their lives, warts and all, in the town where these YA fantasy things happen. It's a beautiful and tongue-in-cheek story, the kind of thing that only Patrick Ness could pull off.

DID NOT FINISH

Gave up at 54 pages because it was so impossibly dull. I tried to read the last chapter because Melina Marchetta's blurb said the last chapter made her cry from start to finish, but that was too boring to finish too.

I would have liked this book more if I was spoiled for the end ahead of time, so my review is chock full of spoilers.

Spoiler
The first sentence of the book, the narration by Junior, is actually the first thought that the Westworld-robot-version of Junior has. You spent the majority of the book thinking that he is being studied so that this company can build a replacement robot version of him while he goes into outer space for a few years, but they are actually studying him to see if they did a decent job making a sentient robot. And they did. It's all very eerie and interesting.

I like the beetles throughout, and the way that the humans reacted vs the way the robots did. I still fucking hate robots, but I was a tiny smidgen sad when they shut down the Junior robot. I love love loved that Henrietta skedaddled and left a robot in her place.
