The characters are so unlikable and don't seem to have any redeeming qualities outside of the sisterhood they have. The end was really underwhelming. The story seems like it is building to something but it one page it just abruptly fixes all the issues in the book. Meh. I won't read the rest of the series.
The artwork is great but they keep throwing out a lot of information with no explanation before the next thing is thrown out. The only thing I got was time travel is involved? I'll read the next volume and see if there is more explanation
The characters were so well developed, that you rooted for even the lesser background characters. The book was a beautifully crafted of two sisters and eventually their daughters living in two different worlds. My only complaints would be the time periods were a little hard to pin down, especially by the time you are in the daughter's perspectives and a few times there were switches into POV of background characters that didn't really matter and were more "filler" than anything.
Too much build up with not enough explained. The book spends so much time leaving us "wondering" if the widow knows anything that by the time it is revealed if it does or not, it seems sudden and out of the blue. The book switches between 4 perspectives in 2 time periods which adds more interest as you try to put all the stories together, but eventually it all falls flat together.
Solid book that touches on most of the mainstream horror films from the 90s (and even a few flops). I didn't agree with all of the analysis, but they are interesting perspectives nonetheless. I do wish it looked more into the effect that continuing sequels had on the formula and horror overall. Definitely worth a read if you are a horror fan. It's in-depth but doesn't drone on and it's not overly analytical in a way that can't be understood by most.
While this is obviously inspired by Scooby Doo, it's very much an adult book. It quickly moves from the expected/traditional whodunit to a more supernatural story, but does continue as a mystery throughout the book. The ending was a little less than satisfying - an extra scene tacked on after the mystery is "solved" that didn't really add anything of substance in my opinion. Overall it was an enjoyable read, there are a couple heavy-handed references to Scooby Doo like a river being names "Zoinx/Zoinks" but it can be a fun read for those that aren't Scooby fans.
Good YA but a good amount of fluff. Constantly switches between different characters points of view with random "informational" chapters. Some of the "chapters" are literally a single sentence. A sweetly tragic love story with a nice epilogue to wrap things up.
