The characters were so well developed, that you rooted for even the lesser background characters. The book was a beautifully crafted of two sisters and eventually their daughters living in two different worlds. My only complaints would be the time periods were a little hard to pin down, especially by the time you are in the daughter's perspectives and a few times there were switches into POV of background characters that didn't really matter and were more "filler" than anything.
