i follow this author on bluesky and she seems awesome, but wow i (usually) cannot stand a romance book about straight people lmao
both of these people need therapy not a relationship
fine overall, i just had a really hard time reading about the yknow rampant animal experimentation
DUDE this duology is so good, i was feeling a little meh on this one up until about ~70% and then i was even more in than i already was
loved seeing Zuri again, i read The Maid and The Crocodile before reading this duology so it’s awesome to get the full background on him
i still love Sanjeet just as much as in Raybearer <333
the entire finale kept making me tear up oh my god i love Tarisai

so i borrowed this upon reading that vico ortiz narrates it, not really realizing that it’s a wolf shifter romantasy,,, uhh no shame to those that like that but it is really not for me
unfortunately this was very :/
(fair warning, i critique this a lot. thats because i can tell it is meant specifically for my demographic (im 18, therefore a young adult, i use twitch pretty regularly, and have been playing video games for most of my life). otherwise i would probably lay off on the criticism a little bit.)
from what i can tell, im meant to be rooting for vivian throughout this story, but i just genuinely couldn’t. shes a jerk who lies about how her sister died and lied about her love interest and is way too obsessed with her twitch subs!also my idea of the ending would be that somehow BobbityWorm would play in but hes just. there at the beginning then is never mentioned again??? wild.
also i hated the romance (there were way too important of things happening in this book for a romance isweartogod), but honestly that could just be because ive met some complete jerk emo/goth dudes so i have zero weakness for the dark and mysterious type.
thank god the pacing was fast at least? if this were any longer i wouldve just been like “fuck it im done” and dnf’ed.
this is more minor but again, as someone who is barely older than viv, uses twitch, and plays games regularly, vivian’s inner voice was dare i say cringe. i’d hoped this book would break the YA curse of being annoying when talking about games but i was so wrong
also this book isn’t that creepy i just got horrific second hand embarrassment each time everyone around viv is like “you did this bad thing!” and shes like “whatd i do?”

i just do not know enough about Latin American history to be able to get enough out of reading this book
this review is basically this: any problems i have with this are solely in me and my own preferences, not at all in how this book is done
the topic is extremely important, abuse between queer couples is really rare to see discussed. carmen maria machado’s recounting is haunting and heartbreaking
this book was amazing, i just have quibbles due to me not enjoying flowery writing styles (usually), and the short chapters and style changes between them felt disjointed. but again this book is very very good, it only didn’t get 5 stars because of my own preferences

thank you so much to Netgalley and Random House Children’s for this ARC !!! all opinions are my own :)
If he’s lucky, maybe he can reach out in time to catch Erin’s hand before it’s gone forever, and he can figure out all the rest later.
alright get ready for me to sing this book’s praises in this review. i love it so much
the characters: max (ftm) and erin (mtf), two trans exes. their goal: make it from their hometown in ohio to berkeley, california. the obstacles: transphobia and also a giant monster in a rural kentucky town who can mess with time and also may be a tad transphobic.
i was glued to this book right from starting it, max and erin are both incredible characters that i love dearly. theyre also not perfect at all, which is nice (more messy trans characters !!!)
this is very much not a light and fluffy book, it is intense and thrilling and gory. i think a lot of andrew joseph white fans would really like this (as evidenced by myself liking it).
the writing in this is extremely vivid, and apparently according to the acknowledgments it started out as a screenplay?? which is just in general amazing
anyway yeah thank you again for this arc. easily one of my top favorites for the year and something i will absolutely recommend to people who want solid trans horror <3
