maybe the previous books were too good, maybe i was getting tired of the story after so many pages, but what i feel towards this conclusion is disappointment. it's not that i disliked, but it didn't leave the same impression as it did before. rin seemed too childish even though now she's way older than in the first book; we had few to none nezha (i can't get over the fact that he doesn't have his own pov. we lost so much because of that) and well, i am aware rin is the main character but this book made that too much, imo. and last, the way the war "ended" was so...? maybe my expectations were too high. the shamans? whatever that was. some specific characters ending that i won't name it but ???? THE TRIFECTA????? felt disrespectful.
in conclusion: it feels like she was lazy to finish the characters plots. like things didn't follow the path that it was supposed to, not because of a plot twist but because it didn't make sense. a lot felt dragged and reviewing the full plot i believe it could've been shortened, or focused on different things that got left out. LMAO I DIDN'T WANT TO SOUND SO CRITICAL AND ALL but it was a long road and a lot of feelings to put out there. and the more i think the more irritated i feel.
HOWEVER, i do love the characters and i wish we had more than rin's pov, specially kitay's. i will keep them in my heart.

hum most of the time i felt like i didn't know what was going on, the magic element was so confusing i still don't know how it worked and why. i didn't really care/empathized with the characters so... you know. the writing is very beautiful though, she has a way with it. i think the book just wasn't for me
i've been wishing for a Quan's book since the first one and after all this time i'm glad to say i wasn't disappointed! helen has a way with her writing that i don't know how to explain, i think she just knows exactly what she's doing. over and over again i find myself falling for her characters and this time wasn't different. by the author notes she confides that part of anna is based on her own story and it's very endearing that she could share this with us. the pacing is great, the characters are lovable and if you enjoyed the previous ones i believe you'll love this as well!
the trope is delicious and the way they got closer and fell in love was really sweet, i loved it! but there were some few things that made me... bored i would say. i think it could've been shorter, it felt like it was dragged after 60%ish and the pacing is something i value a lot in books so...
second, it's not that every book should follow the same recipe, but the falling in love - getting together - conflict - get back together is the usual (i like it) and the book did follow this path but it didn't end when they got back together and i think that was it for me. there was A LOT of story after that and another conflict that felt VERY unnecessary... so yeah.
in general, though, the romance WAS cute (and some stuff hit too close to home), the ending was (predictable) but SUPER CUTE so if you're in because of it i would recommend!

i just... wow.
i have no words to describe this rollercoaster and the only thought i can put it out now is what an amazing writing. it really goes inside your head. i don't think this is a book for everyone, but it is outstanding.

i think one of the reasons that made me enjoy this much was the dual pov. i loved ouyang's pov and i think it would've tested too much of my patience hearing everything from zhu (no offense, but her obsession was getting on my nerves - not so much because of her goals, but truly because of the repetitive words.) nonetheless, it was a great book, the lgbt representation is so *chefs kiss* and it was well wrapped!
i heard there will be a second book... i don't know why? it seems pretty finished like this and i hate when other books are written for nothing. but anyway let's see when it comes
