meh, I didn't like it. Firstly, vampires are boring. Secondly, the protagonist was boring and annoying for most of the book. Thirdly, the book seemed so outdated (well it is but not all old books feel so outdated). Fourthly, the science made me laugh.
Are people still afraid of vampires? I'm not. Don't think I ever was. I hated Anne Rice's book and loved What We Do In The Shadows, I also loved the I Am Legend movie so this book was really not for me. But I did manage to finish it. I was rewarded with an interesting ending. That's about it.

Don't remember when I listened to it but it was the worst experience I've ever had (re: audiobooks)! The male narrator doing the little girl voice literally made me feel nauseous. It certainly added to my distaste for this book overall. Vampires are not my thing and this book is partly responsible.

Started engaging. Mystery was interesting. But by the end, when things started moving fast, I was beginning to get some doubts. Flabbergasted with the resolution. Shell shocked. Stunned. Uncertain. Jumping into book 2 while the going is good.

I had some frustrations with the later half of this book. The protagonist does have that plot armour going, more so in this book than the first one. At least he got wounded in the other book. I'll read book 3. The first half with the mystery was pretty good.

All three books in the series are similar, they start out great. The mystery and investigation keeps things moving. I really liked that! That part was fun. All the side characters were distinct and fairly engaging. Some low points here and there, especially in this book. The weakest point is the ending. The grand finale where Butler gets to heroically struggle against ridiculous odds! Those parts didn’t work for me all that much. But I can live with them.
Some frustration when it comes to all those evil corporations and their evil CEOs, etc. Mercs are not evil. They are loyal to each other and just work for money. It’s the suits and sometimes scientists who are the real assholes. Roll my eyes and move on…
The attitude towards aliens and colonization didn’t read authentic to me. It was really odd but this series doesn’t have the greatest world-building. And with the world poorly fleshed out, no wonder the moralities and attitudes of the people wasn’t worked out well.
Overall, decent books that are quite entertaining but not likely to be ever read again. But, if the writer ever shifts to a more of a detective story that’s slightly more grounded in the resolution, I’d be thrilled to read that book!

No shit, that cliffhanger ending is rather frustrating! Glad I didn't try reading this before book 2 was out.
This was really fun! I didn't enjoy Frontlines as much, that was a bit more depressing. Still good. But I like this world better; it's brighter.

Another cliffhanger ending. So far, none of my predictions came true.

The ending didn’t wrap up everything too neatly; lots of room to continue the series. Aden’s story annoyed me the most. Lots of unanswered questions but lots of implied answers. I’m more frustrated than I should be when finishing an enjoyable series.

Finally! The painful slog through this book is over. I'll try book 3 but I don't have high hopes of being able to finish it.
