Colonyside by Michael Mammay

All three books in the series are similar, they start out great. The mystery and investigation keeps things moving. I really liked that! That part was fun. All the side characters were distinct and fairly engaging. Some low points here and there, especially in this book. The weakest point is the ending. The grand finale where Butler gets to heroically struggle against ridiculous odds! Those parts didn’t work for me all that much. But I can live with them.
Some frustration when it comes to all those evil corporations and their evil CEOs, etc. Mercs are not evil. They are loyal to each other and just work for money. It’s the suits and sometimes scientists who are the real assholes. Roll my eyes and move on…
The attitude towards aliens and colonization didn’t read authentic to me. It was really odd but this series doesn’t have the greatest world-building. And with the world poorly fleshed out, no wonder the moralities and attitudes of the people wasn’t worked out well.
Overall, decent books that are quite entertaining but not likely to be ever read again. But, if the writer ever shifts to a more of a detective story that’s slightly more grounded in the resolution, I’d be thrilled to read that book!
