As expected, it definitely was not as good as the trilogy and now I dread having to finish off with the final novel. I did listen to some of it as the audio version for this once and the narrator is excellent!

"It's your storm, and the future of us all depends on you now. So who are you? Sage, an orphan boy who cares only for himself? Or the undisciplined, rebellious prince your father sent away? Life has tested your resilience and strength and willpower, and you have succeeded in ways nobody ever thought possible. But the storm has never been worse, and it will either destroy you, or define you. When everything is taken from you, can you still stand before us as Jaron, the Ascendant King of Carthya?"
Something I really like about the Ascendance Series is the length of the chapters. All of the novels thus far have been well written, easily consumable, and have had plenty of action, emotion, and humor. I do think it was originally intended for the series to end with this novel, so I will go into the latter novels trepidatiously. But if they're anything like the novels leading up to them, then they'll be just as great!

Just as riveting and action packed as The False Prince, and the perfect segway into The Shadow Throne.

Tobias politely voiced these same concerns, but was waved off by Conner, who asked, "Do you always think small, boy?"
Tobias swallowed. "No, sir."
"Do you think this is too ambitious?"
“I just —” Tobias found his courage. "It seems like what you want would be impossible."
"Nothing's impossible. I haven't come to this plan lightly or without a great deal of thought. But to succeed, I must have a boy who believes this can happen."
"I believe it," Roden said.
"The devils are punishing me for everything I've ever done wrong in my life," he said, marching to the stables to get horses. "They've sent me you three."
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen was just as invigorating as I remember it being when I was younger. I read it for the first time in 6th grade, and decided to re-read it with my brother so that I can read the whole series. It is packed with humor, intensity, and even a little simmering of romance. I cannot wait to read the next book, and honestly am surprised this was never made into a movie with how great it is!
It felt like it was drastically failing at being introspective. Boring as all get out. I wanted to understand the idea of only using gender neutral pronouns, and not naming the narrator, and describing everything so boringly, but I couldn't. The illustrations aren't as out of this world as the reviews try to make them seem either - they're not haunting or brilliant. Such a plain book is a pain ..

"I guess you just never know what you can do until you actually have to do it." Tiffany paused. "You also don't know what might happen to you until it actually happens."
Off the bat, I knew a switch in illustrators meant that I couldn't have the same affinity for the fourth book. Not that Helquist's illustrations weren't still a delight - I just enjoyed what I was already used to. I also didn't much enjoy the drastic shift in Uncle Doll's character - in the first novel, Uncle Doll was encouraging of Anabelle to be adventurous and find her aunt, and in this novel, it seems he did a full 180° and has an attitude the entire time. Other than that, it was packed with the usual mischief and enjoyment that define Ann M. Martin's and Laura Godwin's works. I look forward to reading the novella, and maybe delving into some of Godwin's solo work...as a child I was an avid Martin reader, but Godwin seems to have the same witty charm!

Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin have done it again! And this time, blessed by Brian Selznick's lovely images again, the book was to par with The Doll People. Unlike the sequel - The Meanest Doll in the World - that I listened to and couldn't find the same amusement with, The Runaway Dolls was enchanting and adventurous. I dread finishing their work with the last and final book, but this will be a series I always remember fondly. With illustrations and amazing literary weaving, The Runaway Dolls is a 5 star read for all ages!
I just couldn't get past the writing style, couldn't see myself actually fully enjoying it. Maybe one day I'll come back and try again...

I wasn't able to enjoy The Meanest Doll in the World to the same effect as it's debut The Doll People. Perhaps because the physical copy wasn't available, and I was forced to listen to the audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job, I just don't have the wherewithal to focus on audiobooks. I hope I'll enjoy the other books as much as the first since I obtained the physical versions. The visuals and having pages to then really help with how endearing these novels are, I've found.
