Wow. As a north-easterner who visits Durham regularly, this has opened my eyes to the city.

As for the stories (there are four), each bring their own layer to this fictional, but deeply steeped in history, account of how Cuddy’s final resting place came to be and the influence on the people of the surrounding area. Daft Lad was the final and most touching, reminding us you never know the struggles people are going through behind closed doors.

I personally could feel an undercurrent of dislike for the wealthy, ruling classes but while that could be my own projections onto the text, I don’t think it was.

Probably would have enjoyed more as a physical book, but listening allowed me to absorb the book while gardening so that’s a win

What I liked:
  • Inti and Aggie. Their relationship. Their relationship with their parents. The way they look out for each other.
  • Indi and Duncan. Two people who need to find their right other to balance and challenge at the same time.
  • The premise of conservation which seemed well researched for the most part.

What I disliked:
  • The setting was Scotland. The author doesn’t know Scotland (or the U.K.). So many things that pulled you out of the story because they were just not how things would be here. Simple things like the “jugs of beer” (pints please), Scotland doesn’t have mayors, etc. Please just if you’re going to write about a country you haven’t been, at least do some research. I feel these things could have been found out on Wikipedia or youtube.
