Wow. As a north-easterner who visits Durham regularly, this has opened my eyes to the city.
As for the stories (there are four), each bring their own layer to this fictional, but deeply steeped in history, account of how Cuddy’s final resting place came to be and the influence on the people of the surrounding area. Daft Lad was the final and most touching, reminding us you never know the struggles people are going through behind closed doors.
I personally could feel an undercurrent of dislike for the wealthy, ruling classes but while that could be my own projections onto the text, I don’t think it was.
