After a bravura opening of gruesome pathos, a retired cop is contacted by the killer who got away, but instead of pushing him to suicide as intended, he is energised to hunt him down while the killer plans a return engagement. Hodges tracks, acquiring an unlikely set of helpers and the killer gloats and/or flies into rages and has a weird relationship with his Mom.

A CIA case officer CIA sees a UFO and reports it, ruining his career. Years later after a certain 60 Minutes episode on military revelations about UFOs, he's put on a committee to review CIA/UFO reports. This ends up being less about UFOs than why his report went the way it did way back. It's ok.

n the far future a woman is hired to research three missing weeks in the life of a foundational thinker whose ideas shaped the world. Closer to the presnt, the same thinker is on the run with a complete stranger who is carrying a biomedical thingummy she hopes will change the world. It's pretty neat, the Hitchcockian adventure dovetailing into the utterly transformed future, the utopian future slowly revealing at least one small nasty worm in the apple. 

A colony on the moon run by women, where men don't have the vote. Some young men, feeling repressed, get active about changing things, leading toconflict with friends and family and ultimately tragedy. An intelligent and complex look at a different way of doing things and its discontents. 

A maverick moon jockey and his adventures on the moon. Reprimands, solar flares, unlikely romantic encounters, thrermonluclear war and brain-altering chemicals make life difficult in general and in particular.

A group of people on one of those US islands that tourists like to go to but which are also poverty stricken and such is plagued by some sort of wind-demon that slaughters a whole load of people. It's a good horror story, the creature itself well-realised and scary, as much a spolied child or wild animal as a malevoent spirit finding new and interesting ways of killing people with wind. Not sure about the ending.

Time twisting story that takes on the question of whether's there's any point to anything if the past can't be changed. No, thats not quite right. You can't change the past... or can you? That's closer. Great story. Subtle, its ideas carefully explored, like all the other Chiang stories I've read.

Choosing the edition with that cover because LOOK AT IT. Grant's slow-burn low-key horror can still manage to be utterly ruthless and take no prisoners, and here a mysterious visitor to Oxrun Station immediately results in bodies dropping all over the place. Slow burn doesn't mean fast paced, and the story flies along with plenty of misdirection and atmosphere.
