After a bravura opening of gruesome pathos, a retired cop is contacted by the killer who got away, but instead of pushing him to suicide as intended, he is energised to hunt him down while the killer plans a return engagement. Hodges tracks, acquiring an unlikely set of helpers and the killer gloats and/or flies into rages and has a weird relationship with his Mom.
