I’ve come to the conclusion that I really hate slow books. Like DNF them, hate them.
And these violent delights is slow. And even though I haven’t read the second book, I think they probably could’ve been combined into one book.
Having said that, I did like the setting. It’s Chinese, of course I’m going to like it.
The twist on Romeo and Juliet was nice, not your typical straight up retelling.
But some of the foreign language, without explanation was difficult. And the beast insect thingy was weird and I don’t understand it. I don’t even think the book needed it.
It might be personal preference but I would’ve much preferred it be taken out and the book just be a Chinese retelling in Shanghai in the 1920’s.
I have bought the second book, but I’m torn as to if I’ll read it.

I really enjoyed this book! I know a lot of people didn’t really, but I did!
I did find bits a bit hard to follow, especially with the gods and stuff, I’m still learning lol, but I got there!
I loved castor and van and miles.
This was a great mix of urban fantasy, mythology, and adventure.
I highly recommend!

This was an okay book.
I didn’t realise it was going to be so heavily mythological, but I’m going through a kick so it was okay.
But it wasn’t really a book that had my interest. It was just kind of, blah.
I honestly don’t know what to say about this except it was interesting as far as the god and titans but as a story it just didn’t do anything for me.
I won’t be continuing with the series.

There is so much hype about this book, but it is so slow!
It’s also really heavy on the mythology, and for someone who isn’t that well versed on it, I just couldn’t do it.
It’s a shame as I was beginning to be interested in mythology but this book tested that interest to the limit, and beyond.

6 stars.

Oh my stars! This book is just... incredible.
So rich in history, and culture, and characters.
Val and Jamie are my heart.
Bo is life.
Wink and Olly and April and Charlotte are just perfect.
But this book? It is devastating in the best way.
You know what happens, and it is foreshadowed, perhaps a little too much at times, but you still hope that they see that iceberg and turn!
There are also massive shades of titanic the movie here, but it’s still different enough.
I love this book. This book breaks my heart, and not just because of the story, but for the real life stories that were never told.
But please, read this book.

I think I’ve come to the conclusion I’m not a fan of this series.
This book is better than the first two, but still, it’s not enough for me to rave over.
I liked the developments here with rip, slade, and auren.
I like how things played out and the twists, but it’s all just meh. I don’t care about it. I’m not invested in it.
Will I read the next one to see what happens? Maybe. But it’s definitely not a favourite and definitely not worth all the hype.

I wanted to like this book. Asian books are my jam and I was so intrigued by the happenings of the 1950s with Chinese Americans, but this book was SO slow!
I got to pretty much 50% and nothing really had happened.
I tried to keep going, but man, it was boring.
It pains me to DNF this book, but I don’t know I can keep going.

I think this might be a decent book, but it’s just not for me.
I was thinking it was a little like the diviners, but it’s really not.
I don’t know if jasper and birdie’s situations are explained as the story goes on, but I felt it was needed earlier.
I also didn’t like Allene, like, at all. She was stuck up in a way that Evie O’Neil made completely charming.
So I am DNFing this book.

This was an okay book. The style of writing, what I think is 2nd person present, is super weird and at times pulled me out of the story. I understand why it was written that way, but it was super awkward for me.
But I did like the diversity of this book.
I liked the myth busting of reality tv dating shows, but kind of had suspicions of anyway.
I also liked the heathy way it examined mental health issues. It was a refreshing and healthy take.
But it was super fast paced for me, and again, the writing style, just too weird for me.

Holy. Gods.
I don’t really do mythological type books. I’ve never been into that. But this book, and the coming series, make me want to get into it!
I loved this book.
Early on there were 50 shades vibes, but that very quickly, and thankfully, dissipated and we’re left with a great story.
I loved how hades and Persephone are equals.
I love how he has moments of weakness, and how she’s not sure of who she is.
I love the soft moments, I wish there were more of the spicy ones.
But overall this book is fantastic and more than worth the hype!
