Wow this book has a lot of haters! I thought this book was really cute. It’s just two sweet cute nerds falling in love and brought me back to a carefree time when I didn’t have to think about things like: paying bills! Job security in a failing economy! Existential dread! Such innocence.

A lot of people criticized the book for having that “not like other girls” trope, which is a fair critique. I think the author tried to go for a progressive, feminist theme but ended up falling into that trope and having an unhealthy girls-hating-on-girls element.

3.5 stars. This was a good book. Attica Locke is skillful at vividly constructing setting, atmosphere, and those complicated, nuanced relationships that are so hard to capture in writing.

This is a solid historical fiction novel. Drama but make it medieval + pretty good battle scenes. My jam 100%.

When We Are Kind is a beautifully illustrated children's book that is profound in its seeming simplicity. Each page provides lessons and moments of reflection for young children, as well as the adults reading with them. I loved the calming nature of this book, and the illustrations reflect what people in the world actually look like. I really appreciated the parts of the book that make the reader reflect on being kind to themselves, and how acts of kindness can have other positive effects, such as feeling comforted and happy.

Would definitely recommend adding this beautiful book to any young child's book collection or any library collection!

Slow Moe is a cute book that is a great fit for kids who have siblings. The illustrations are beautiful and bright, and the book has a fun, airy feel to it. The main device of the story is that a little girl's brother is an annoying "snail" because he takes his time eating breakfast, walking to school, etc. However, he turns into a fun, energetic human brother when adults and obligations aren't around! It might be a bit difficult for really young kids to initially "get" the metaphor of the brother being a snail, but it's a good lesson about patience and tolerance. Personally, I found the transition from snail-brother to human-brother a bit clunky. I had to read through it twice to clearly understand the flow of the story. But, it's a sweet story with excellent artwork.

Such a wonderful, escapist read. Loved the wish fulfillment setting of a not-as-awful world brb sobbing.

I am IN. TO. THIS. SERIES. Margaret has a badass moment at the end, but Idunno I thought she’d have more of a major part in this book since it was named for her?? I understand though, the Middle Ages in England was patriarchy-central, and most historically remembered events (ie awful battles, recorded political maneuverings, etc) were carried out by men and their BELOVED sons. I appreciate this series because yes, it still includes the misogyny that is intertwined with the historical events it’s discussing, but there’s not added overt misogyny from the author. It’s refreshing to read a historical fiction that does that.

Wow, what an adorable book! Pugtato Finds A Thing is a sweet story of a hybrid potato-pug creature that follows their potato-heart to make a new discovery, and a new friend. The rhymes make for a great read-a-loud, the illustrations are cute and hilarious, and all of Pugtato's animal-food hybrid friends make for really fun reading experience for kids as they identify the foods/animals throughout the story. The only drawback to the book is the gendering of the characters. I wish the author would have gone with gender-neutral language instead of assigning pronouns.

All of the short stories in this collection are pretty good. An Exotic Marriage is EXCELLENT, which bumped this rating up to four stars. I loved Motoya’s use of the uncanny, the bizarre, and the grotesque. I feel like I especially loved An Exotic Marriage because I’ve been socially distancing with my partner since March and this fact really gave me a fresh feeling of being completely unsettled.

It was alright. V melodrama, v emotional, v book club.
