Animals: Zebra, musk ox
Travel: All 7 continents
After Musk Ox claims he has never been to Africa, Zebra decides to travel around the world with Musk Ox. A silly, goofy travel story with a smattering of factual information.

Family: Father, grandfather, great-grandfather
Clothing: Tailor, remaking clothing
One piece of fabric is transformed by Grandfather's tailor hands into a coat, blazer, vest, tie, toy, and finally a cozy nest for a mother mouse and her babies. A simple story of reinvention and hard work that demonstrates the longevity something can have if it is loved. Parallel to this story is a family growing, transforming, and expanding, revealing that the granddaughter is telling her grandfather's story to his great-grandson. The illustrations are top-notch and perfectly compliment the story. Meaningful and charming.

Concept Skill: Counting
Tullet tackles counting to 10 in 10 different ways. Fun and repetitious without being tedious. This could have been confusing and overwrought but Tullet inserts his creative art and off-the-wall humor to maintain interest.

Animals: Mouse
Familiar experience: Too much screen time
A surprisingly well executed parody about being sucked into screen time. A boy gives the mouse Applesauce an iPhone to shut him up for 10 minutes. What he doesn't anticipate is that Applesauce wants the phone for much longer, not realizing all the fun activities that surround him. A fun, exaggerated way to look at too much screen time, relatable by the reader and the listener. Tsk, tsk on the pass-back effect, little boy!

At the age of one, Nobody Owens escapes the clutches of a murderous death by toddling into a graveyard. The ghost inhabitants decide to rescue Nobody from his pursuer and raise him under the protection of the graveyard, granting him honorary "ghost" privileges until he turns of age. Or until his interest in the outside world cause him to be found.
A perfect introduction for young readers to fantasy worlds that don't star animals (such as Warriors and Redwall) but carry an intriguing plot. The development of Bod was organic and gave believability to his steely, determined personality. That being said, the action scenes didn't feel like they contributed to the overall plot and felt somewhat pointless.

Cultures: Variety
A simple celebration of commonalities across all cultures. I absolutely loved the spread depicting the phrase "Books open doors to worlds we've never seen before." In it, the books are taller than humans and some people walk through doors cut out of them while others browse the pages like an art gallery. Well done and effective!

To repeat the masses, I love Salina Yoon but this book fell way flat with no originality. It didn't feel like the red dot had any character so I didn't care about getting it to where it wanted to go. The disappearing bar was also a little weird. I believe it was trying to imitate video games but missed the mark. Seek out other interactive books and pass this one.

Ocean Life: Whale
I do so love stories that add originality to the picture book collection. A great storm pushes across a beach front one night where a boy and his father live with their 6 cats (I hope you enjoy finding them on the first page as much as I did!). The next morning, Noi finds a whale washed ashore and knows he must take action fast. But what is he going to do when his father comes home?
A tale that doesn't anthropomorphize an animal, and presents, in a reassuring way, the need to release it back to the wild.

Three robbers, and a tiny tagalong, discover a beautiful bird and must have it for themselves. While the three bigger robbers feel they know the best way to capture the bird, the littlest one decides to use kindness to attract a whole flock of birds, but only for their company.
The repetition make this a great read-aloud and the monotone color scheme give it a unique touch, drawing attention to the prized, colorful bird.

Family: Grandson, grandparents
A reluctant grandson would rather spend his vacation with his friend than his grandparents but he soon finds out that his young-at-heart grandparents are willing to break the rules and have loads of fun. Definitely addresses a child's hesitancy to stay with grandparents for an extended amount of time.
