The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
3.0

Age: 4th-7th grade

At the age of one, Nobody Owens escapes the clutches of a murderous death by toddling into a graveyard. The ghost inhabitants decide to rescue Nobody from his pursuer and raise him under the protection of the graveyard, granting him honorary "ghost" privileges until he turns of age. Or until his interest in the outside world cause him to be found.

A perfect introduction for young readers to fantasy worlds that don't star animals (such as Warriors and Redwall) but carry an intriguing plot. The development of Bod was organic and gave believability to his steely, determined personality. That being said, the action scenes didn't feel like they contributed to the overall plot and felt somewhat pointless.
