Harter Tobak. Autobiographisches Werk über Vergewaltigung und Mobbing an der Schule.

I'm not a huge fan of young adult novels but this one is different. the cast is diverse, the characters well rounded and full. there are a lot of interesting supporting characters and the mindset and behaviour of the female protagonist is way less cliche and stereotype than usual.

I also liked the fact how cultural heritage was interwoven and treated in the world and the plot.

I have mixed feelings about this book. At first I thought it was brilliantly funny because it's a parody of toxic masculinity and male entitlement. But the last chapter turned all that upside down. The dialoge is witty and funny, Flores' art is a mixture of western and manga style that fits the story well. If you're into young adult rom-com and like scooters this might be for you.

The biggest problem with this book is that it doesn't make it clear if this is meant to be a critique or not. Should I connect to the main character or should I hate her (For me it's rather the latter)? I never believed her insecurities and I always thought of her behaviour as childish and not very smart.

This is strange because it's so unlike anything O'Malley has written before. Maybe I'm missing something here. But it just didn't work for me.
