This is domestic, slice of life fiction, centered on how a woman can feel trapped in her own home after becoming a mother. I was looking for something different, which is why I give it 3 stars, but I’m all for these types of books being published, since they give voice to what so many women feel during matrescence. Let’s please add to the narrative, that there’s more ways to be a woman and mother than just a “happy housewife.”

I listened to the audio, and I enjoyed Beth Moore’s narration, which was very Southern and filled with fun, colorful sayings. It’s a pure memoir, there’s no real deep dive into spirituality or doctrine. She does devote some time to talking about her split with the Southern Baptist Church, which I appreciated, but it seemed like other big issues were glossed over, such as the childhood sexual abuse, her husband’s illness, relationships with her daughters and other family members, and her husband’s nephew that they took in. I know that life doesn’t wrap up neatly and I’m sure these things are very painful, but I have to be honest, it left me wanting more.

I enjoyed this a lot! I thought it was a good mix of sci-fi thriller and ideology. It’s solidly YA with characters who can act rashly and immaturely, which I’m not always a fan of, but I enjoyed the author’s take on what it means to be famous in the age of social media. I thought it got a bit heavy-handed toward the end, but this is a YA book, so again I didn’t mind. Know that it ends on a cliffhanger, so I immediately tried to check out the next audiobook but had to place a hold.

A solid lawyer/detective story, nothing groundbreaking, but a fun weekend read, especially if you like Sue Grafton. Reminded me of The Good Wife, one of my favorite TV shows of all time, which makes sense since the author wrote for the spinoff show.

Domesticity plus fantasy, all in 110 pages. This book is discordant because of its juxtaposition between mundanity and spectacle. Written in 1983, it just goes to show how women have fought back against societal norms for ages, whether it’s protesting in the streets or in their own minds.

The best part of this book is how Kevin Cook connects Waco to the modern militia movement, the Oklahoma City bombing, and InfoWars. The chapters on Koresh and the standoff are well-written yet concise, and I didn’t get bogged down by all the names and events. I also really appreciated his conversations with the people who actually lived in Mt. Carmel, Clive Doyle, David Thibodeau, Sheila Martin, and Heather Jones.
