I adore the illustrations in this one! Mallory's dress is so pretty on the cover. We also see the three siblings growing closer in this book, trusting one another and sticking up for each other more.

This one has more of the traditional fairy-tale elements- elves, sprites, a unicorn, and even a pooka!

I love the magic in these books!

Wonderful ending to a great series!

Another fantastic book from Shannon Hale! I loved revisiting these great characters in the sequel. The new palace setting was excellent too! I especially liked the Queen's Castle school, the scholar's robes, and the old teachers with their quiet wisdom. I could just imagine myself in that great place of learning. It got a bit slow in the middle, but picked right back up pretty quickly. Like the first book, there is action, and mystery, and lots of colorful characters who just won't do what you expect them to.

This is not really a book for children, but for adults reminiscing about their childhood. The language is complex and flowery. The humor dry and a little bit sarcastic. The plot sweet and innocent. I love how the author takes the small doings and events of young childhood and gives them all the end-of-the-world importance that we feel when we are young.

I fell in love with this book on the first page. What a whimsical, magical story! I love the Irish mythical/ folk tale setting, re-imagined into the modern world. The writing carries an immediacy and energy with it that makes it impossible to put the book down!
Between every chapter is the sheet music to a traditional Irish reel or jig which corresponds to elements in the story. I kept rushing to the piano to play the songs, and searching on YouTube to find recordings of the music. Beautiful! A book with a built-in music soundtrack makes it the marriage of my two ruling passions!
I especially loved that our main character, J.J., is a musician, and rediscovers his love for music through the story and finds new levels of skill and appreciation for music.
The plot is all kinds of fun, with plenty of twists and turns, mysteries to solve, and magic to enchant us.
Now I'm going to hunt up every other book by this author, and listen to some more traditional Irish music!

Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus and must struggle through untold horrors to make it to the Doors of Death. Jason leads the rest of the crew to find the entrance to the House of Hades with Nico to guide them, but they are delayed by constant attacks from giants and monsters. Leo is separated from the crew and is trapped on an island with a forgotten goddess.

Gah!  I just... I can't... too much feels and emotions. How is it possible that these books keep getting better?!?  I'm going to die from loving this book too much. I will be dead, and they will gather around my corpse and say, "A book killed her. She loved the book too deeply and the strain on her heart was too much."

This is simultaneously my favorite book in the series and also my most hated book in the series, because the characters just suffer so much. The adventure is so amazing, and it's wonderful to see how these characters grow and become stronger and more courageous in the face of horrible trials. But I hate to see my favorite characters suffering and injured and in pain. It's really inspiring to see how they rise to every challenge though.

I just adore Leo so much! I love his sweet romance in this book. I just want to give him a hug and feed him cookies! So adorable!
Frank has a serious glow-up in this book as well, and he gains some confidence in himself and starts to carry himself with more certainty.
I love Nico's sad character. He is always so depressed and pitiful, and my heart goes out to him. In this book, Nico reveals that he is homosexual and he had a crush on Percy. It makes my heart hurt to see him so lost and alone.
The shining stars of this book are Percy and Annabeth. They stick together through all the horrors of Tartarus, and they give each other courage. It's so sweet how they are always trying to shield and protect each other. Their love is so strong and true that it gives me hope for this battered old world.

This is such a fantastic series! The emotional connection with the characters, the suspense and action in the plot, the philosophy of sacrifice and giving of yourself for others.... all wonderful! It was lovely to discover this wizardly world under the ocean, and the descriptions of marine life were incredible.
It was interesting to see Nita having to interact more with her family, especially her sister. I loved the character of S'ree, the whale! She really glued the whole story together.

This book did not quite grip me the way the first book did, but that is common for a sequel. Still... I'm confident that I'll continue to enjoy this series!

You really have to read this one together with "house of Arden" in order to understand it. Not the greatest of Nesbit's books, but a grand tale with plenty of magic and noble deeds.
