The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

5.0

Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus and must struggle through untold horrors to make it to the Doors of Death. Jason leads the rest of the crew to find the entrance to the House of Hades with Nico to guide them, but they are delayed by constant attacks from giants and monsters. Leo is separated from the crew and is trapped on an island with a forgotten goddess.

Gah!  I just... I can't... too much feels and emotions. How is it possible that these books keep getting better?!?  I'm going to die from loving this book too much. I will be dead, and they will gather around my corpse and say, "A book killed her. She loved the book too deeply and the strain on her heart was too much."

This is simultaneously my favorite book in the series and also my most hated book in the series, because the characters just suffer so much. The adventure is so amazing, and it's wonderful to see how these characters grow and become stronger and more courageous in the face of horrible trials. But I hate to see my favorite characters suffering and injured and in pain. It's really inspiring to see how they rise to every challenge though.

I just adore Leo so much! I love his sweet romance in this book. I just want to give him a hug and feed him cookies! So adorable!
Frank has a serious glow-up in this book as well, and he gains some confidence in himself and starts to carry himself with more certainty.
I love Nico's sad character. He is always so depressed and pitiful, and my heart goes out to him. In this book, Nico reveals that he is homosexual and he had a crush on Percy. It makes my heart hurt to see him so lost and alone.
The shining stars of this book are Percy and Annabeth. They stick together through all the horrors of Tartarus, and they give each other courage. It's so sweet how they are always trying to shield and protect each other. Their love is so strong and true that it gives me hope for this battered old world.
