I want to give this five stars, but feel like I should save it for the last book... Might change later!

EDIT: got over myself and upped rating from 4.5 to 5.

It’s definitely been too long ago since I’ve read this book to write a coherent review about it. I did however finish it in a couple of hours, which speaks for itself. Also, here are some quotes and thoughts I marked down while reading:

’... we were looking at the same sky together, which is maybe more intimate than eye contact anyway. Anybody can look at you. It’s quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.’

————————————————————————

“I’m not much of an outside cat...”

>> ME!

————————————————————————

’...we just sort of stood there not touching, which to be honest is my preferred form of greeting.’

>> Wouldn’t that be easier for everyone?

————————————————————————

‘Everyone always celebrates the easy attractiveness of green or blue eyes, but there was a depth to Davis’s brown eyes that you just don’t get from lighter colours, and the way he looked at me made me feel like there was something worthwhile in the brown of my eyes, too.’

>> As a brown-eyed person who sometimes wishes she had blue eyes, this made me smile and feel good about myself.

————————————————————————

‘The worst part of being truly alone is you think about all the times you wished that everyone would just leave you be. Then they do, and you are left being, and you turn out to be terrible company.’

————————————————————————

‘The problem with happy endings is hat they’re either not really happy, or not really endings, you know? In real life, some things get better and some things get worse. And then eventually you die.’

This is going to be the shortest review ever, but I just wanted to share my favourite line from this book with you guys :P

Harry, Ron and Hermione are in Divination class and have just started with the crystal ball. When professor Trelawney asks if anyone needs any help to "interpret the shadowy potents within their orb", Ron whispers: "I don't need any help, it's obvious what this means. There's going to be loads of fog tonight"

I loved the eerie atmosphere the author created. The old mansion with its numerous empty rooms, the mounted animals which seem to move of their own accord, the nightly ghostly appearances, the spiteful, mean-spirited lord ruling over the house... Though some might find this story to be slow-paced, I somehow didn’t have an issue with that. The way the story and characters developed kept my interest the whole time. I was intrigued by the mystery and wanted to find out what the hell was going on! The reveal at the end was very well done in my opinion and I couldn’t have predicted the outcome.

‘“Do you ever wonder,” he asked, “how we decide what’s mad and what isn’t? There’s so much crazy stuff in the world - everything’s a mess most of the time - but then people who can’t handle it are called mental and have films made about them... But what if they’re just reacting to the weirdness of the universe? Isn’t it more weird to just think everything’s okay, when it clearly isn’t?”’

Evie’s speech in the last chapter, criticising gender roles in our modern society, was epic! It’s such an important discussion to have!

This is a true page turner! I didn’t want to put the book down, which made it a very quick read. I loved both Alessandra and the Shadow King as characters, athough they could have been more developed. At times, they felt a little flat. But I really enjoyed the progression of their relationship. And although I could predict certain plot lines, there were still some surprises for me left. I love me some great twists!

This basically covers season one of True Blood, which I’d seen before. I guess I would’ve enjoyed this book more if I hadn’t already known everything that was going to happen... but that’s just my own fault for reading this after watching the series. Still, an enjoyable read!
