It's official. Donny Cates has entered my top 5 writers. Like seriously...I love almost everything I read by him!
So we got this story that sounds familiar. A 16 year old girl is having a baby. Nothing we haven't seen on MTV right? However, this baby is the son of the devil, or the devil himself, or a demon, or...well we don't know yet. However, it's not normal. Big ass black eyes when born, creates earthquakes, and eats blood. This is not the type of baby you want but Sadie, that's mom, will protect and take care of her son no matter what. Even if he does bite nipples hard enough to make blood.
Now the ones behind the scenes are seeing these earthquakes and go NO! We must KILL the baby. Scary huh? So they send a assassin and now it's on. The chase to kill the baby while Sadie and her family stops them.
Good: I love Sadie. I love The Captain (her father). I love her sister. I love the family dialog and dynamic because it feels so real. I enjoyed the storyline of protecting your child even if he might be the devil himself. The idea of a organization coming to kill him is really interesting and the events that occur are screwed up to say the least. The comic has perfect pacing, slowing down when it needs to but giving you fast paced action at the same time. Also the art is a perfect mix of gloomy yet not too dark.
Bad: Nothing.
I love love love this story. Like Redneck Donny Cates is able to really give us a good mix of humor and horror in one go. His dialog is top notch and his characters are all varied and interesting. Anything with Cates name on it needs to be checked out it seems. This is a 5 out of 5 for me.

Now this was a badass event. I mean it's a X-Men event in the fact it's all X-men titles but a damn good one.
So what happens when the mutant race is in trouble? No more are popping up. The X-Men are losing their minds. Everything is slowly coming apart. OH SNAP here we go a baby is born! The future might not be as bad as we thought. However, every single mutant group wants in on this including non-mutants who like to kill mutants. Now it's a race to whomever can get to this baby first and what they will do.
Good: Love, love, love the way all these X-men titles mix and flow so well. X-Factor,New X-men, Uncanny and X-men all work really well together surprisingly. While there's a few writers they all mesh well together. I loved the tense and chasing feel the entire story gave. As if time is running out, and everyone in scrambling. It felt like it had a ton of stakes too as people would die a lot, and not just minor characters. Each faction of the X-men had something to do which made it even better.
Bad: Some of the art was tough to follow making the action hard to understand. I also thought the big death at the end had been done so many times it was getting a little tiring.
Overall this was great. Exciting, fun, great dialog, with some awesome plotting. I really enjoyed this one a ton and easily give it a 4 out of 5.

I'm on a little X-Men kick today!
So X-Force. The series I've been meaning to check out but took forever to get to. I finally sat down and began reading volume 1 and at first, I'll be honest, it wasn't clicking with me. I love X23, like wolvie, like Warpath, so I enjoyed the characters but the story was hoping all over the place. However, once it began to settle down and got to see the plot for what it was, which is pieces of religious shits trying to hurt our characters, I was getting in to it. Then add on the fact we had some brutal showdowns and big balls to the walls action I began to understand what the X-Force is all about.
Good: Really dug Wolverin/X23 in this. Their relationship is always interesting and here is no different. I also enjoyed Angels storyline here and felt bad for him, and poor Sinclair...man that shit was not easy to see. The ending also sets up so many awesome ideas that I hope it follows through.
Bad: I didn't love the start. Felt the execution at first was a bit sloppy in storytelling. I also didn't dig the art much. It feels like action figures placed in a comicbook. Just very odd at first but kind of get used to it.
Overall this was a lot of bloody fun. Some great action, some "Oh shit" moments, and a lot of dark and gritty X-men joy. A 3.5 out of 5. Will read more!

This book was sent to me by a friend and I'm glad I got a chance to read it. This is like a nice "calm and fun" tale between all the shit I read haha.
SO Usagi is a samurai. He's going around the world helping others and taking jobs. This book is basically a bunch of short stories put all together. I actually read volume 1 was just that, short stories, even before Usagi got his own comic. So this is a small glimpse into the life of the Ronin before he got his own series. SO we have tales of horse stealing, hunting down a org, fighting a blind samurai, and more!
Good: I really enjoy the art here. Nice and light but still gives us emotional faces and moments. The storyline is fun and cheerful that's easy to get in to but also have some badass moments from Usagi. The ending also gave us a bit more emotional look into his life and get some of his past.
Bad: It feels disjointed as it's just a bunch of stories together. Also the development on the characters are light and feels like a small little comic strip you'd read in a newspaper. I assume because these stories are before the main line but still.
Overall very enjoyable. It didn't blow me away, but it didn't need to. I had a smile on me the entire reading it. A 3 out of 5.

I wanted to like this but I just couldn't get in to it or the characters.
So basically it's a murder mystery with atmosphere similar to say like "The Thing" or "Alien" and that should work perfect for me. I love both those. The cast is super diverse which is a plus and it has a main lead who isn't just on the straight and narrow and has some internal problems. When her father is found dead she goes deep undersea to the base to find out what happened. Then her brother goes missing and well...the mystery is on!
Good: I liked the idea of it a lot. I also liked the setting. Something about being underwater and alone and isolated is as scary as it is going into space.
Bad: I did NOT like the art. It felt way to sketchy and I understand the appeal but it was not for me. I also hated the lettering and it made it hard to read some of the lines. The characters, while interesting at times, didn't seem to capture me at all. I can't even remember anyone's name sadly. I also thought the ending was a letdown and I wasn't eager to pick up the next volume at all.
While a interesting setting and diverse cast is a step in the right direction this title did little else to keep me going.

This was dull...
So the Justice League are holding some type of Sanctuary for villains. To keep them safe from other, worse villains. On top of that Amanda Waller crazy ass is coming after the Justice League. Also the volume contains some short stories giving other members like Vex, and Red Arrow, some freedom to grow and same with Wally West as Flash. All together it creates a jumble mess of a collection.
Good: The Flash chapter was pretty fun. Kind of giving a deep look into the trouble Wally after his return. I also enjoyed the Vex stuff as she's coming to terms of who she is. Also Batman, superman, and wonder woman shooting the shit was fun.
Bad: The art is wobbly and sometimes pretty bad. I love Ethan's work with the flash but the rest was meh. Also the story is jumbled, and it feels boring to be honest, and not well constructed like previous volumes.
Overall this isn't awful but something not all that memorable. Except like last volume it's not even coherent at times. So a 2 out of 5.

Damn this volume really stepped up.
I enjoyed the first volume but here's where we get the tension building. So last we saw adults arriving at the save haven. We step back a few days prior to them arriving to get a little bit more background. Then we fast forward to the moment at the end of volume 1 and all hell breaks loose. This volume is really focused on two main characters and the distance they will go to survive and by the end you're left with a sinking feeling this is all going to go to shit.
Good: The nail-biting pace is perfect in this. People getting killed not just for the sake of shocking deaths but you actually FEEL pity and sadness. The dialog is great and every character has their own distinct voice in the volume. The ending builds and builds to a truly fucked up and sad ending that nailed me on a emotional level.
Bad: The art is still not great for me, and some faces are laughable.
Overall this was fantastic read. When I started I couldn't put it down till I was done. If you're going to do a story about survival just give me the feeling of loss and being scared, this does it well. A 4 out of 5.

So I never had much interest in Sin City. I saw parts of the movie and the style never stuck with me. So with the graphic novel I never really wanted to dive in because Frank Miller, while I respect, usually isn't my style of comics. Yet, I'm kind of glad I picked this up, because it was pretty fun ride.
Marv is a old asshole ready to fuck some shit up after he wakes up to a dead girl on his best. After making love and waking up and seeing her dead he flips out. He goes on a hunt to find out who could do this? Especially behind his back since he is a trained killer. The story takes us to the worst parts of Sin City trying to track down who did what. The trip is...trippy (get it?) and brutal and downright fucked up.
Good: Enjoyed the monologue for the most part. Usually it can go to the side of boring but it worked well here. I also liked the brutality of this world. That everything is bitter and broken. The villain here is truly creepy and the way he does his "thing" is disturbing to say the least. The ending also was well done and had that "the only way it could end" yet still surprise you somehow.
Bad: The woman in this seem...useless. As if they were written as plot devices and that's about it. I especially didn't like the way Marv talked about them, almost like children or dumb. Was annoying. It could just be a product of it's time, or Marv's views, but still. I also thought the art wasn't that great. I know it's a style but sometimes I had to re-look a page 2-4 times to get what the fuck was happening.
Overall it's good. I didn't think I'd like it at all so it was a surprise for me. I'll def read the rest of the series but this was a solid fun start. A 3 out of 5!

I was bouncing back and forth on if I liked this or didn't understand what the fuck is happening. Luckily it ended on a good note.
So Supergirl starts off with her being alive again. If you didn't know she died awhile back. Then a copy/alien/robot type version took her place for awhile. It wasn't the Kara we knew but a whole new character who took the mantle. Now that she's back she's kind of in a mood of "leave me the fuck alone" and "let me find my own damn place in this world" type situation. So that's the first arc, which also includes two different supergirls and a little bit of powergirl. Then 2nd arc is a tie-in to a cross event with a evil superman. Then the last two issues are Supergirl trying to figure herself out and also try school out since she's supposed to be a 16 year old girl.
Good: The art is good at times, some great fighting moments, and also the coloring is top notch. I also liked this Supergirl as she was a little unhinged but still doing the right thing even if she felt she didn't have to. The issue with her in school was also filled with lolz.
Bad: The art, while good, is super "sexy" from that style. Supergirl is skinnier than I think possible, a lot of almost ass shots, and such are filled in this book. Also the cross over tie in, while only 3 issues, nearly made me hate this book. It was really luck that the rest of the volume was far better than those 3 awful, convoluted, and confusing crossover issues.
Overall this was pretty enjoyable if take away those 3 awful issues. because of them I can't give it any higher than a 3 but still worth checking out if you enjoy Supergirl as a character.

A different, yet kind of cool, look into the future of Japan.
So it's the year 4001. Everything is obviously super advance, looks slick, and Japan of all places looks stunning. Now there'a crime committed and it's the first one in a very long time. Rai, the protector of Japan, decides it's time to hunt down the person(s) behind the act and bring them to justice. However the deeper Rai gets into it the darker the future is for the robotichumaniod thingy (sorry I'm still not clear what he is). Will this turn out good in the end for our protector? Obviously fucking not but is it fun to read?
Good: I enjoy the atmosphere of the future of Japan. Super futuristic with lots of colorful shots that make this Japan something very different. Rai's fighting style is a Samurai on crack and he's just slicing and dicing and it looks badass. I also thought the ending dropped a nice "oh shit" moment that makes you want to read more.
Bad: The heavy exposition in issues can get annoying. It's the classic "don't tell just show" that was obvious here. Just a heavy dump of explaining instead of showing. I get they need to be somewhat limited due to the artist here usually being slow but still. Also, talking about art, this isn't my favorite style. Hyper realistic just isn't my thing and with this style it fits at times (some of the action is nuts) other-times characters look like toys in a painted background.
Overall this was solid and fun. Sure, some of the dialog could have been cut, and I'm not in love with the art, but I do enjoy it's atmosphere and interesting story progression with some good side characters. I'll be checking out volume 2 for sure! A 3 out of 5.
