A lovely debut! I really enjoyed the combination here of wonderful friendships, finding your passion, and standing up for what you believe in

I really wanted to love this, but it didn't super work for me.

What I liked: various combinations of queer families, kids dealing with real world problems, casual queerness and a setting that was open and welcoming for all types of queer people

What didn't work: there was so much packed into so little real estate. For just under 200 pages, I wanted more from everyone. With so many characters and storylines, nothing was truly given enough time to breathe and I felt like the scenes jumped from one to the other so quickly there wasn't enough time to sit with each character and interaction

I do recommend this for middle grade readers looking for a story about all different types of queer people and families and I do like that the young characters had agency. I just didn't love the structure and thought it would have been better focused on 1-2 characters or been 100 pages longer to give more space for everyone

Part memoir, part scientific research, part social commentary, I enjoyed learning about sharks, Graham’s life, and the intersection of race and science. I appreciated the way she demonstrated the parallels between the way society vies sharks and Black people

My only issue with this was the writing itself— it felt like it needed another pass with the editor

Overall I liked this story and Graham’s dedication to carving her way and making space for others in spaces where not everyone is welcome and celebrated

Gosh, I loved this book! Not only is the writing excellent, but the story is messy and beautiful and complex and for me was the perfect balance of a YA narrative and an adult narrative

I liked the different perspectives of various ways and conflicting experiences of being trans. I also loved the unlikely friendships within this story

Highly recommend!

An excellent human-centered look at what happens to those left behind on the other side of deportation

Oh, I just loved this! Theater kids, queer self discovery, and catholic / religious questioning/trauma is a winning combo for me
