I actually have never seen anything Wu is in, and yet I loved this book and deeply resonated with Constance. Through a series of essays about growing up in Virginia to becoming a star and being a spokesperson for Asian American (something that was put upon her), Wu is deeply vulnerable and apologetic. I listened to this as an audiobook and both her voice and writing shined.
I am so glad I finally got to this and so upset with myself I did not prioritize it in 2018. Orange's writing is creative and original. He shares an often invisible narrative about Urban Natives and their strength in a society working against them. Set in Oakland, California, the ensemble cast of characters are so unique and beautiful and I loved understanding how they were all interconnected. I knew little of powwows and while this was a devastating portrayal, it left an impact. A absolute must read!
One of the best books I've ever read, I could not put this down! A stunning story about a Nigerian queer girl growing up during the civil war of her home country. Okparanta's writing and storytelling is like no other, leaving me in a trance every time I picked up the book. A queer classic about a girl's strength, family, and heart.
A bit confusing at times, but I otherwise loved this story and learned so much! About a 17 year old native, ace girl with the ability to bring about people and animals from the dead, she sets out to avenge her cousins death. A fantastic mystery with compelling fantasy elements, Darcie Little Badger teaches readers about Indigenous history and its power. I highly recommend.
I had no idea what this book was about when I started it, but from the first page I was held by this eerie feeling in my cut set by the tone of Chan’s writing. A dystopian novel with critical look on the increasingly unattainable expectations of perfection in mothers and the US CPS system’s continuous harm on children, mothers, and whole families. Frida, after leaving her 1 and a half year old home alone for 2 hrs ends up at the School For Good Mothers, where she spends a year away from her kid, participating in intense programming to learn how not to be a bad mom. Chan is thoughtful, criticizing systems of racism and classism through satire and embellishments of the real world. Her writing style matches the feelings and happenings of Frida, making you empathetic to Frida and consequently turning you into a bit of a fuck-the-system Marxist.
As an international adoptee with years of nannying experience and no interest in having kids, this book was particularly interesting. Do birth mothers who repeatedly fail their child deserve to get their kid taken away? What is the threshold of good mothers and is it getting further away?
Worth all the hype its received and more.

Gosh, this book was amazing. Told from the point of view of an objectively horrible person, Kuang expertly draws back the current on the publishing industry, specially for writers of color. From the first page, Kuang captures readers attention with a thrilling exploration of two writer friends, one Asian and incredibly successful, and the other white and fumbling massively. When Athena, the Asian one accidentally dies, June, the white one seized the opportunity to steal Athena’s manuscript and publish it as her own, despite it being a story she arguably shouldn’t be telling, regardless of whether it was of her own words or not. An interesting look at cancel culture and racism, Yellowface is so well written, with fascinating characters and a massively compelling plot. Bonus points for the love letter to Washington DC aspect, too.
This book was crazy and I could not put it down. About 5 people who are meant to be on a reality survival show, but end up getting abandoned, this book had everything I love. Mystery, fast paced, and a sapphic love story! Braverman is such a good write oh my gosh. Please everyone read this right now!
