Loki: Where Mischief Lies is a Loki origin story, following him when he is younger. After Odin sees a vision where Loki will do an evil deed, he is seen down upon and does not get the chances to prove that he can be king just like Thor. After another misstep, he is sent to Midgard to investigate a serious of mysterious murders.

I was personally very excited when this was announced, I love the Loki we have in the MCU and thought this was going to be great. Loki here is on page bisexual (Or pan?) and confirms that he is not attached to either gender. I liked the representation, but I feel like the rest could have been executed so much better. It didn’t feel like a Loki origin story, because he was kinda stupid. It is not clever and exciting like I want a Loki story to be, but more straightforward and kinda… uninteresting? Check out my full video review for more thoughts, but overall I don’t think you are missing much if you don’t pick it up. 3/5 stars.

Juliet Takes a Breath follows Juliet, a Puerto Rician plus sized lesbian, going to Portland for an internship with a woman named Harlowe. Who write a bestselling book about feminism and queerness. Right before leaving, Juliet also came out to her family and she is very unsure of how they took it…

There are many very important discussions in this book, about being queer, a person of color and a woman. It goes deep into so many different themes and issues, and I felt the discussions and the talks were very well done. I think Juliet was a wonderful character to follow, to see her learn about a different world and all the new terms in the lgbt+ community. There were some beautiful moments were Juliet is thinking and discovering, and I felt with her and alive through her. The plot is a bit of a standstill, but I feel like this is very common in contemporaries where while a lot doesn’t necessarily happen and have a very exciting plot, it is more a character driven story about their journey. I’m glad this is getting republished and I’m hoping it falls into hands of many new readers. 4/5 stars.

The Beautiful is the highly anticipaited new release from Renée Ahdieh. We follow Celine who moves to New Orleans in 1872. A series of murders starts happening, seeming to target people around Celine. She also meets the very handsome and mysterious Bastien, and is tempted into the dark underworld of New Orleans.

This book is pitched as a dark vampire book. I thought: Finally, vampires are back! But really, it felt like a letdown in that regard because vampires are not really that present in the book. When we finally are going to get more information and answers about them, we ultimately don’t really get any… so the expectations I had going in; weren’t really met. That doesn’t mean however that what I got, I disliked! Looking away from the instalove, I really enjoyed the different characters and writing. The cast of characters are filled with diversity and witty dialogue. The things I liked, I really really liked. So even though it didn’t meet my expectations, didn’t make it a completely disappointing read. And the end left me wanting more! 3.75/5 stars.

In Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky we follow Tristan (lol) who has a really hard time lately. His best friend recently passed away and he disappointed his parents after losing his first boxing match. He is sent with his grandparents to their farm in Alabama, a creature shows up and steals the notebook him and his best friend used writing stories in… he follows the creature, and accidently punches a magical tree (causing a hole in the sky) + falls into a magical world.

I loved learning more about West African and African American folklore & myths, it was all portrayed humors & wholesome. I loved Tristan so much, he was the best kid and made me laugh out loud with his fears and reactions to the things happening around him. I really cheered for him, and seeing him grow into a wonderful hero was the best! The sad parts of his life was explored very well, and I think it is important for kids to see the sorrowful things in the world as well as going on a joyous adventure with this kid! The overall message about the importance of stories and storytelling made my heart swell, and the ending both shocked and amused me to no end. I literally could not stop smiling of certain consequences befalling a certain character in the end… can’t wait to see where that will go in the sequel. 4/5 stars.

The Guinevere Deception is the first book in a new trilogy, following Guinevere from the Arthurian legends! We follow her perspective arriving at Camelot, which has its new king: Arthur. She is to be his wife. What is unknown to the people is the Guinevere is actually not Guinevere, but a sorcerer sent there to protect Arthur from an unknown magical threat.

I didn’t even read the synopsis for this book before reading it, so all the reveals and twists and turns were so surprising! I loved how the kingdom was built here, how different workings in the kingdom were explained and exploded. Camelot, in a literal sense, rising. Lol. The characters all had great different traits and were very well written. I loved Guinevere, Arthur, Mordred (my babe) and Lancelot. Also… potential f/f romance for book two? Yes, give me now. I generally love the Arthurian legends, and everything here was therefore so much fun. I loved what Kiersten did here. My biggest issue was probably the plot, which sometimes moved too fast and all around, I just didn’t like the construction of it that much. Buuuuuut I’m so excited for more, I literally want book two this instant! More thoughts in my video review, but I’m going this 4/5 stars and begging for moooooooore.

Girls of Strom and Shadow is the sequel to Girls of Paper and Fire, following Lei and Wren in the aftermath of the first book. They are sent on a new quest, going out trying to gain alliances to take down the court of the Demon King once and for all.

The more I think about this book, the more I like it. Even though the book has a “journey plot” that I usually am not the biggest fan of, it is done really well. The world and characters are explored and deepened, making us care and really fall into this very intriguing world Natasha has created. There are so many parts that makes this story, the relationship between Wren and Lei, deeply explored and deeply flawed, but so beautiful and real. The horrible things (trigger warning: sexual assault) that they went through the first book are not forgotten, nor ignored. The plot does stagger a bit because of the journey plot, but it gives a lot of vital pieces for the last book in the trilogy. The twists in this really got me, when Lei realizes certain things and it hurts her… it hurt me deeply as well, that is how much I started to care for her. I talk more about the details and what I enjoyed in this in my video review! 4-4.5/5 stars.
