finally a book for the girls who can't help but lie every day... never thought i'd be this called out on my bs.

it's way better than love on the brain, not as addicting as the love hypothesis, but i think this is ali hazelwood's most mature / emotionally deep (definitely most steamy) novel, so like... i loved it.

i think you have to love the characters for this to be an interesting/fun read, but luckily i very much loved the characters.

i didn’t read the synopsis before going into this book and let me tell you… this is not what i thought it was going to be about lol

kinda cute and a little weird, which means i mostly found this to be an endearing read.

although, i really wanted the author to explore some of the more absurd aspects of this plot. like girl, you are invisible ?! why is everyone being so nonchalant about this ?! i need a full-blown investigation, along with the crazy side quests and emotional revelations !!! i would be convinced i’m dying or being punished by a higher power lol

anyways, i’ve never been that big a fan of magical realism, so maybe it was never supposed to be my thing. but i do recommend for a fun time. also henry <3 best dude <3 supporter of women’s wrongs <3
emotional hopeful mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

woah, this was surprisingly more emotional than expected!

while it's definitely a romantic story, i think i found the emotional arcs of each character far more satisfying than the actual relationship. both of our main leads had such depth and fleshed out stories, emphasizing the complicated nature of each character and why they do (and do not) work for one another. i cried for both of them.

however, i will say that the budding romance between the two was kind of hard for me to appreciate... i didn't really understand why they were such opposing magnets? other than the forced proximity, a bit of physical attraction, and some moments of emotional support, i could not understand the appeal. thomas constantly belittled sylvie's career and lifestyle choices and sylvie was (in thomas' eyes) a manipulative, compulsive liar. so like, those feel like complete deal breakers to me... however, i will say, they were tender (and mature !!!) enough to win me over in the end.

overall, this was a very nice, surprising read. not really lighthearted, though, so go into it expecting to shed maybe a baby tear or two.
adventurous fast-paced

the writing may not have been anything special, but i am in the middle of an INTENSE little mermaid phase... so this felt like gourmet food at the time.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

more stories about haunted houses and hot priests and maybe a little witchcraft please !!

a fantasy novel that feels more akin to a wwi love affair, i think this is one of the more uniquely endearing books i have ever read.

however, the romance is the pulse of this story, and while i was very on board with the slow burn rivals corresponding through anonymous letters half of this novel… anything after that mostly felt rushed to me. therefore, it kind of lost my interest.

BUT it was still a very fun read! i loooove rebecca ross’ writing!! (the pining/yearning/straight up pain in book 2 is about to be crazy)
