woah, this was surprisingly more emotional than expected!

while it's definitely a romantic story, i think i found the emotional arcs of each character far more satisfying than the actual relationship. both of our main leads had such depth and fleshed out stories, emphasizing the complicated nature of each character and why they do (and do not) work for one another. i cried for both of them.

however, i will say that the budding romance between the two was kind of hard for me to appreciate... i didn't really understand why they were such opposing magnets? other than the forced proximity, a bit of physical attraction, and some moments of emotional support, i could not understand the appeal. thomas constantly belittled sylvie's career and lifestyle choices and sylvie was (in thomas' eyes) a manipulative, compulsive liar. so like, those feel like complete deal breakers to me... however, i will say, they were tender (and mature !!!) enough to win me over in the end.

overall, this was a very nice, surprising read. not really lighthearted, though, so go into it expecting to shed maybe a baby tear or two.
