I listened to Station Eleven in a pandemic, so why not read a book about how hard it is to tell the difference between androids and humans set in 2021?
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) follows Rick Deckard as he hunts down androids and retires them. An empathy test is given to subjects in question in order to determine whether or not they are human. As androids are given memories, it makes them even more human-like and begins to blur the line of what it means to be a human.
I solely wanted to read this book because it was set in 2021. I love things that are set in the future, but now the future has come to pass. I couldn't wait to watch Back to the Future: Part II when Marty goes to the year 2015. When I first watched the movie as a kid, 2015 seemed so far away. Now it seems so far away, but in the opposite direction.
I enjoyed Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? much more than I thought I would. So much so that I wanted to watch Blade Runner right after reading it. I was surprised that the movie is set in 2019 and even more surprised that the book was originally set in 1992. Only the recently published editions are set in 2021. Now that it is 2021, will the setting be changed again?

Jay Reguero is in his senior year of high school and has plans to attend University of Michigan in the fall. As his spring break nears, Jay learns of his cousin's death. No one in Jay's family will talk about Jun or what really happened. Eventually, Jay learns that Jun was murdered by police for being a suspected drug dealer as part of President Duterte's war on drugs. For his spring break, Jay travels to the Philippines to learn the truth about his cousin's death.
Patron Saints of Nothing was phenomenal! I am so glad it was chosen for book club because this novel wasn't even on my radar. While the mystery of Jun's death will draw you in, Jay's emotional journey and growth was powerful. I cannot recommend Patron Saints of Nothing enough!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been on my TBR for a long time. I had tried to read it once before but set it aside after only a few pages.
When Christopher finds Wellington, his neighbor's dog, dead in her yard, he knows he has to solve the murder. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is the mystery that Christopher writes, drawing inspiration from Sherlock Holmes.
It took some time for me to get into this novel, but once I did, it was good! It becomes so much more than Christopher solving the crime. It's also a really quick read. I liked that there were illustrations and diagrams to show how Christopher pictures things in his mind.

When Avery Kylie Grambs has to go to the principal's office, she's not expecting to find Grayson Hawthorne sitting in the chair instead. She also doesn't expect to be included in Tobias Hawthorne's will or inherit the majority of his fortune. When it becomes clear that everything in Hawthorne House is a puzzle, Avery must decide who she can trust as she tries to solve the mystery of why she is there in the first place.
My January focus was to slow down while reading. I was doing pretty well with it until I got to The Inheritance Games. Between short chapters and all of the puzzles to be solved, I couldn't put this book down!

All I knew about The Cruel Prince going into it was that it was about faeries and it was all over Bookstagram.
From the first chapter, this book immediately had my attention. When Jude is a child, her parents are murdered in front of her. Along with her sisters, Jude is taken to live in Faerie with her parents' murderer. Madoc treats them well and raises them among the gentry, but Jude knows she will never really fit in with them.
I really liked Jude as a character, but I could have done without the romance. She is strong and smart, even if she does overcompensate at times. Jude learns to control her anger and skillfully takes what she wants.
The biggest question is: how soon can I read the next two books?
