Thank you to Libro FM for the gifted audiobook of Dauntless through their educator ALC program!  All opinions in this review are my own.

I had a difficult time getting into Dauntless at first but I think it was more me than the book. Once the world was established, I was pulled into this novel.  I love the lush jungle setting and the threat of the mysterious beasts beyond the walls of the city.  I hope that the author writes more books in this world!

The Christie Affair

Nina de Gramont

DID NOT FINISH: 54%

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the gifted copy of The Christie Affair!  All opinions in this review are my own.

Unfortunately, I DNFed this one at page 168.  The mystery surrounding the days that Agatha Christie went missing is an alluring premise.  Coupled with the affair her husband was having, I was instantly drawn to this book.  It took me a little while to get used to the fact that the mistress was narrating it but I eventually had to stop because it became more about her and her past rather than Agatha.  There was way too much backstory for her and I got to one scene in particular that proved to myself I was done with the book.

The Kindred

Alechia Dow

DID NOT FINISH: 26%

Thank you to Libro FM for the gifted audiobook through their educator ALC program!  All opinions in this review are my own.

Unfortunately, I DNFed The Kindred at 27%.  I was loving this audiobook until Joy and Felix crash landed on earth.  There was so much great world building prior to this event that I was excited for them to travel to other planets.  I loved the relationship between Joy and Felix and was interested in learning more about their bond.  However, I don't want to read about them in Florida trying to fit in.  The amount of pop culture references took away from the original world building.

I've heard Dow's other book is set in the same world as The Kindred so I'm still curious to read that one!
dark mysterious fast-paced

Cale works at the local diner with Penny in their small desert town.  When Penny doesn't show up for work one day, Cale goes looking for her.  After discovering Penny has left her phone behind, Cale knows something is wrong.  As she desperately tries to get help looking for Penny, Cale realizes she is just going to have to take matters into her own hands.

What I Liked:
- told out of chronological order but still easy to follow
- mystery of Penny missing sucks you right into the story
- short chapters keep you reading
- atmospheric writing so I felt like I was with Cale

Her Perfect Twin

Sarah Bonner

DID NOT FINISH: 60%

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the gifted copy of Her Perfect Twin!  All opinions in this review are my own.

Not that I expect people to be likable in a thriller, but Her Perfect Twin just takes it a little too far.  At first, I liked the uneven standing that the reader has with Megan.  I was not quite sure when she was telling the truth, but the scheme she eventually concocts just becomes too much to keep track of, especially with the introduction of the pandemic.  I was willing to keep reading until I got to the second part narrated by Chris.  Of course he is not supposed to be likable, but his narration just became too much.

I am DNFing Her Perfect Twin at page 200.

The Change

Kirsten Miller

DID NOT FINISH: 33%

Thanks you to William Morrow, BiblioLifestyle, and NetGalley for the gifted copy of The Change!  All opinions in this review are my own.

After a little more than 150 pages, I've decided to DNF this book.  It started out really strong and I loved the atmosphere of it.  Unfortunately, things have kind of stalled.  After reading some reviews, I don't know if it will pick up enough again for me to finish it.

SYNOPSIS

Franny thinks her day can't get any worse when she is fired from her job.  As she steps onto the crowded subway with her arms full of her belongings, her dress gets caught in the door.  Franny hears a ripping noise and knows today is going to get so much worse!  Enter Hayes, who takes off his suit jacket in order to cover Franny.

A stranger catches the whole incident on social media and it goes viral!  People are rooting for them to be together, but Franny knows Hayes is not the one for her.

REVIEW

I was laughing from the first chapter of this book.  I felt so bad for Franny but the disaster meet is both cute and hysterical!  I loved being able to read from Hayes's perspective too because it showed how much both of them were struggling with their viral romance.  I always like when you get to read both sides's in a romance as they begin to fall for each other too.
